Athlete Profile: Allen Jobe

Versatile senior helping new-look Tigers on court

TIGERTON — With a new coach running the show, the Tigerton High School boys basketball team has leaned a bit more on its three seniors. Allen Jobe is one of those seniors, and he is enjoying the changes that coach Kent Wheeles has introduced this season.

Along with helping serve as a leader, Jobe also fills up the stat sheet when on the court. On the offensive end, he averages about 10 points a game.

In the past, Jobe did most of his work on offense around the basket, but he has been encouraged to try and make an impact from behind the 3-point arc, too.

On defense, he makes life difficult on opponents in the paint. Jobe also currently leads the Tigers in rebounding.

Q: When did your interest in basketball begin?

A: My interest in basketball started in third grade. It was an after-school program where I could develop my basketball skills.

Q: What is your favorite part about the basketball season?

A: My favorite part about basketball is stealing the ball from my opponent. It makes the game exciting because nobody is expecting the steal. Then it is a fastbreak to the hoop.

Q: With a new coach leading the team, how has the team adjusted so far?

A: The team has adjusted very well with the new coach. Coach Wheeles has us working on perfecting the five out and the different press styles. It has been an exciting challenge, but I think we are ready for it. He is teaching us how to believe in ourselves and in our teammates. We are playing at our highest level.

Q: What has the team learned about itself in the early going of the season?

A: We have learned how to believe in ourselves, our teammates and our coaches. We learned how to pick each other up when adversity hits and not to hang our heads after a game. We think about all of the good things that happened during the game.

Q: As a senior, is there anything you personally hope to accomplish on the basketball court this winter?

A: As a senior, I would like to go out with a bang, so I would like the team to win conference. I would like to get more 3-pointers. I am a power forward, so I don’t shoot many threes, but this year coach changed our offensive into a five out, so I have a lot of opportunities to shoot 3s. I want to have an 80% free throw shooting average.

Q: What’s your favorite memory of competing on the Tigerton boys basketball team?

A: My favorite memory probably would have been my first 3-pointer. My team decided to give me the ball within two minutes of the last half to shoot a 3-pointer. I shot but missed. One of my teammates got the ball, passed it back to me; I shot and drained it.

Q: What are you going to miss most about high school sports?

A: I am going to miss being on a team where everyone picks you up after a bad game, or have my team cheer me on when I make an and-one. I am going to miss where everyone jokes together and plays together as one coherent unit.

Q: What is your favorite thing to do when you are not in school or competing in a high school sport?

A: I like to work outdoors. I like to hunt, fish, trap and tan hides. I am also trying to get into blacksmithing.

Q: Favorite movie, TV show?

A: My favorite show is “Forged in Fire.” My favorite movie is “Secondhand Lions.”

Q: Name one thing about yourself that not many people know?

A: I am allegedly related to Henry Ford.

Q: What is the greatest piece of advice you have ever been told?

A: My greatest piece of advice is never give up and be yourself.

Q: What are some things you hope to accomplish after completing high school?

A: I want to become a journeyman electrician, have a family, land and a great house.
