AROUND THE COMMUNITY: CMN renews transfer agreement with UW

University of Wisconsin-Madison representatives visited College of Menominee Nation’s main campus in Keshena on June 3 as interim Chancellor John Karl Scholz and College of Menominee Nation President Christopher Caldwell signed the renewal of a long-standing transfer contract between the two schools.

This transfer contract allows CMN students in the liberal studies program to seamlessly transfer into UW-Madison based on specific criteria. All CMN credits transfer to UW-Madison, but are based on their intended program of study.

“The transfer contract shows a working partnership between our two institutions in the best interest of our students,” said Geraldine Sanapaw, CMN chief academic officer. This contract will serve as a pathway to creating more opportunities that will benefit our communities.

CMN has had a long-standing relationship with UW-Madison, according to Sanapaw. The transfer contract began in 2007 to illustrate the commitment of multiple institutions working together for the success of students and communities.

Organist bringing holiday cheer to Zachow church

Organist Isaiah Buhrke’s “Prelude to Christmas” concert was canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19, but he’ll be bringing some holiday cheer when he performs at 3 p.m. Aug. 14 at Zion Lutheran Church, N4437 County Road F, Zachow.

Blind from birth, the genetic disease that took Buhrke’s sight continues to threaten his hearing, and has left him with high-functioning autism. When COVID-19 closed churches, the musician could no longer earn a living playing organs for worship and when McDonalds closed its inside service, he lost his paid position there. Buhrke even lost his volunteer job playing the piano at a hospital and his personal contact with his friends, which is particularly difficult for blind people.

Instead of giving up and letting the pandemic win, Buhrke threw himself into his music.

“I have always had and will always have a deep love and passion for the organ,” Buhrke said.

A freewill offering will be taken, and refreshments will be served in the church basement by the Zion Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. Action Team Funds from Thrivent are paying for the concert. Visitors can stay after the concert to meet Buhrke personally.

Anyone who cannot attend but would like to support Buhrke’s efforts to pass on the joy and light of Jesus may send a donation to Zion, Zachow, N4437 County Road F, Bonduel, WI 54107, or visit his Thrivent fundraising concert page at https://thrivent.cotribute.co/events/662745/detail?src=crowd-fundraise-a....
