Area boys hockey teams’ postseason play ends

Waupaca 4, Antigo 2

A pair of goals in the last minutes of play ended the season for the Antigo Red Robins boys hockey team on Feb. 15.

The No. 5 seeded Red Robins, a co-op team with Wittenberg-Birnamwood, lost 4-2 to No. 4 seed Waupaca in the WIAA Division 2 Sectional 2 regional round.

The Comets opened the game with a goal in the first period another in second to take a 2-0 lead. Eli Kassler’s short-handed goal at 13:59 in the second period made it 2-1.

Owen Dickman tied the game at 2-2 at 7:02 in the third period. However, Waupaca’s Liam Bloedow scored twice at the end of the game, first at 16:08 and then at 16:37, to steal the contest from Antigo.

Antigo was penalized there times for six mantes, and Waupaca was called for two infractions for four minutes.

The Red Robins combined for 14 shots on goal, while the Comets had 41.

Fond du Lac 9, Shawano 1

Fond du Lac poured in four goals in the first period en route to a 9-1 victory over Shawano in the Division 1 Sectional 2 WIAA regional game Feb. 13.

Shawano’s lone goal came from Blake Knope at 1:20 in the second period to make the game 4-1. Gavin Hundt and Cam Schroeder assisted on the goal.

The Cardinals scored three times in the second period and another two times in the third period for the lopsided win.

The No. 13 seed Shawano was called for five penalties and served 18 minutes, while No. 4 seed Fond du Lac was hit with two infractions for seven minutes.

Shawano used two goalies in the game. Tyson Lyons played one period, gave up four goals and recorded 13 saves. Kaiden Thornborrow played two periods, gave up five goals and noticed 17 saves.

Offensively, Shawano managed only nine shots on goal.

Bay Port 6, Ashwaubenon 0

Bay Port, the No. 1 seed, shut out Ashwaubenon 6-0 in the second round of the WIAA Division 1 Sectional 2 postseason Feb. 15, ending the season for the Jaguars.

The Pirates scored twice in the first period and four times in the third.

Ashwaubenon is a co-op team with Pulaski.

Ashwaubenon 3, Sheboygan South 2

Ashwaubenon defeated Sheobygan South in the opening round of the WIAA Division 1 Sectional 2 postseason Feb. 13. Ashwaubenon was seeded No. 9, and Sheboygan South was No. 8.
