21 UW student-athletes have tested positive for COVID-19

University of Wisconsin student-athletes have been returning to campus for voluntary workouts over the summer as part of a phased approach being implemented by the athletic department.

Fall sports are now moving into official preseason practices. Part of that phased return involves COVID-19 testing.

UW Athletics first tested student-athletes on June 8. Among 117 student-athletes who were part of the initial group tested, two tested positive. The department released an update on July 8 stating it had conducted a total of 428 COVID-19 tests, resulting in seven student-athletes testing positive.

As of Aug. 5, a total of 259 student-athletes have returned to participate in workouts. A total of 1,788 COVID-19 tests have been conducted on student-athletes and staff between June 8 and Aug. 5, and 21 student-athletes have tested positive.

Per UW Athletics’ previously stated protocols, the department continues to isolate individuals who have tested positive and UW Athletics’ Infection Response Team is monitoring their recoveries.
