Wittenberg-Birnamwood 60, Menominee Nation 58

The Chargers boys basketball team kicked the year off with a buzzer beater win over the Eagles of Menominee Nation on Dec. 4.

Zandyr Barke hit a game-winning 3-pointer as time expired to give the Chargers a 60-58 win at Keshena.

Barke paced all players with 20 points on the night, with teammates Oliver Fraaza pouring in 15, Logan Gibson 10 and Tommy Gagnon adding nine.

Witt-Birn led by as much as 15 in the first half, but the Eagles clawed back to tie the game with 10 seconds remaining in regulation. Barke received the inbound pass, dribbled through multiple Eagle defenders and launched a shot about five feet beyond the arch as the scoreboard lit up, burying the game winning shot.

“For this being our first game of the year, playing a very tough team on the road, I thought our boys executed very well in many different facets of both offense and defense,” Witt-Birn coach Garrett Rogowski said. “Our lead diminished and defensive rotations slowed as we began to tire and the game wore on, so there are a few adjustments we make after the guys watch the film. Overall, I was very happy with the outcome and their resilience down the stretch.”

Gillett 40, Wausaukee 38

The Tigers nearly saw their 12-point halftime lead falter, but Gillett hung on for a 40-38 win over Wausaukee.

Wausaukee, trailing 30-18 at the break, won the second half 20-10, but came up two points short of forcing overtime.
