Are young hunters ready for hunter ed class?

When is your son, daughter, grandson or granddaughter ready take a hunter safety class so they can carry a firearm, bow or crossbow on their own?

This is a simple question that often has no easy answers, but patience and empathy are the keys.

I’ve taught hunter education classes since the mid-1980s, first in Iowa and then in Wisconsin, with more than 20 years in Iola and Waupaca. I’ve had the privilege of working with one of the largest volunteer instructor groups in the state, led by the capable and award-winning chief instructor, Paul Piencikowski.

Avoid tree stand tragedies

Tree stand accidents are a leading cause of hunting-related injuries, with 300-500 fatalities annually in the U.S., according to the International Hunter Education Association. As archery and crossbow deer hunting season begins this fall, prioritizing safety is essential.

“You’re much more likely to get injured from a fall than a gunshot wound,” said Dr. Michael Clark, EMS medical director with Aspirus MedEvac. “It’s a concern that we should definitely take precautions to avoid.”

Tom Finlan Invitational

Five Bonduel runners earned medals at Josten Park in Green Bay, with the varsity squads competing against six other schools.

The girls took fourth place with Mariah Wondra and Teagan Engel earning medals for first and 12th place, respectively.

Also running for the Bears were Cierra Schnell 27th, Taylor Rank 45th, Kember Frome 47th, Madalyn Sokolski 53rd, Bella Roberts 54th and Alisha Berg 60th.

Also, Seidy Blandon earned a medal on the JV team.

Wondra, Salveson lead T-Bird Invite

Iola-Scandinavia T-Bird Invitational

Bonduel’s Mariah Wondra bested all girls in the Iola-Scandinavia T-Bird Invitational, with Wittenberg-Birnamwood’s Rory Salveson placing second.

The Wittenberg-Birnamwood girls placed third and the Bonduel girls were fourth in the Iola-Scandinavia T-Bird Invitational.

For the boys, Menominee Nation placed fifth, Bonduel was sixth and Wittenberg-Birnamwood was 11th.

Sept. 6

Gresham/Bowler Invite

Gresham/Bowler and Menominee Nation found themselves in identical situations at the Gresham/Bowler Invite.

Both teams defeated Faith Christian (Wausau) 2-1 but then lost 2-0 to Shiocton.

Marshfield Invite

Shawano won four of its five matches at the Marshfield Invite.

The Hawks opened play with a 2-1 win over Abbotsford.

That was followed by 2-0 victories over Antigo, Ladysmith and Mondovi.

Hook and line sturgeon season opens Sept. 7

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reminds anglers that the 2024 hook and line season for lake sturgeon will take place on certain waters from Sept. 7 through Sept. 30.

All anglers looking to harvest a lake sturgeon must have their general 2024 fishing license and a valid hook and line lake sturgeon tag. Licenses and tags may be purchased online through Go Wild or from a licensed vendor. All license requirements and regulations apply.

Bonduel, Tigerton win in three games each

Bonduel 3, Crandon 0

Bonduel defeated Crandon in three straight sets: 25-8, 25-13 and 25-19.

Bonduel was led by Audrey Weier with nine kills and 11 digs. Josie Anvelink and Audrey Jacobs chipped in six kills each. Paige Niquette had 13 assists and Jayla Reinke had four aces.

Tigerton 3, Marion 0

Tigerton defeated Marion in a CWC North match. They won in three straight sets with scores of 25-8, 25-23 and 25-22.

Pulaski tops Sturgeon Bay in shutout

Pulaski 5, Sturgeon Bay 0

The Red Raiders rolled to a 5-0 win over the host Clippers of Sturgeon Bay in non-conference action.

Pulaski jumped on the board early with a goal in the second minute from Hudson Schultz. Maddox McKeefry scored in the 17th minute to give the Red Raiders a 2-0 halftime advantage.

Pulaski wins in final seconds

Aug. 30

Pulaski 21, Hortonville 18

The Red Raiders opened the scoring with less than a minute remaining in the first quarter against Hortonville and then scored with less than a minute left in the game to seal the 21-18 win.

With 59 seconds left in the first quarter, Ethan Schmidt connected with Trevor Schuessler on a 6-yard pass as Pulaski went on top 7-0.

Hortonville scored twice in the second period and led 12-7 at halftime. They extended the lead to 18-7 with a third quarter touchdown.
