Youth Swim: WASP racks up first-place finishes at pair of meets

SHAWANO — The Wittenberg Area Swim Program won the WASP Winter Meet on Saturday before turning in several strong finishes at the Shawano Winter Meet on Sunday.

WASP’s Kelsie Davis finished first in all three of her individual events, the 50-yard freestyle, 50 breaststroke and 100 backstroke, and helped the 200 medley relay team also take first in the 11-12 division at Sunday’s meet in Shawano.

Lily Metropulos (10-and-under division) came in first in the 100 butterfly and 50 freestyle.

Shawano pulled away in the second half behind Carter Weisnicht to claim a nonconference victory over Pulaski on Friday in Shawano. Weisnicht scored 29 points in the game, including 12 of the team’s first 13 points in the second half.

Bonduel opened its season with a dual win on the road over Rosholt on Thursday.

Logan Majewski (138), Kaden Bergsbaken (170) and Isaac Banker (195) earned six points each for Bonduel after pinning their opponents.

Max Sokolski (145), Alex Garside (220) and Tyson Bogacz (120) all picked up forfeit wins for the Bears.

Deer harvest numbers down nearly 25%

MADISON — While gun deer license sales numbers were on par with previous seasons, harvest totals took a big hit.

After 213,972 deer were registered statewide in 2018, a total of 160,769 were registered during this year’s nine-day season, according to a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources news release on Tuesday. That is a 24.9% decrease.

About the same number of licenses were purchased between the two years — 564,664 licenses this year, compared to 576,277 last year.

Athlete Profile: Olivia Curley

WITTENBERG — The Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School girls basketball team entered the regular season with big goals and a roster full of talent. Senior Olivia Curley hopes to lead the team to those goals.

Curley is the team’s point guard. She primarily sets up her teammates, but can also connect from 3-point land and attack the defense off the dribble.

Curley opened the regular season with a 10-point effort in the team’s win over Peshtigo. She also tallied three assists and three steals in the contest.

Wrestling: Loaded area teams eye big seasons on mat

SHAWANO — Area wrestling teams head into the season with stacked rosters and big aspirations.

With several impact wrestlers back from last season’s squad that won the Bay Conference, Shawano expects another big season.

Coach Mike Homan’s team will be headlined by seniors and juniors and filled out by incoming wrestlers.

Seniors Keith Tourtillott and Ben Carroll will lead the Hawks, while juniors Nick Kohn, Trace Yeager, Gage Timm, Colten Herm, Reef Anthony, Carter Schmidt and Wyatt Brandt help form a strong core.

Menominee Indian’s defensive pressure was too much for Gresham to handle in a Central Wisconsin Conference crossover battle in Gresham on Tuesday.

Menominee Indian had four players score in double figures, led by Norman Kakwitch’s 16 points. Allen Smith chipped in 15 points, while Menom Powless had 14 and Tiger Dixon 11. Mariano Lyons and Raymond Fish each tallied eight points.

Deer harvest numbers from opening weekend down

MADISON — More than half a million hunters purchased licenses to enjoy opening weekend of Wisconsin’s 168th gun deer season.

As of midnight Nov. 24, preliminary figures indicate that the number of deer hunters in Wisconsin is near par with last year.

Sales for gun, bow, crossbow, sports and patron licenses reached 782,815 as of midnight Sunday. Of that total, 555,227 were for gun privileges only. This number includes gun, patron and sports licenses.
