Fresh off their bye week, the Green Bay Packers are now gearing up to play their toughest stretch of games.

First up for the red-hot Pack is a road contest with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

The Bucs’ roster underwent a roster overhaul during the offseason, with the signing of quarterback Tom Brady dominating the headlines. Despite all the additions, Tampa Bay is off to just a 3-2 start, including a one-point loss to the Chicago Bears to kick off week five.

Wittenberg-Birnamwood finished off a perfect run through Central Wisconsin Conference-East Division play by sweeping Shiocton 25-18, 25-23, 25-12 on Thursday in Wittenberg. It marked the Chargers second-straight conference title.

Area volleyball teams learn postseason seeds

Area high school volleyball teams learned their postseason fates when the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association released its tournament brackets Wednesday night.

Division 1

Shawano is the lone area team that will compete in Division 1. The Hawks earned a No. 5 seed and will travel to take on fourth-seeded Waupaca in its first playoff match Tuesday.

The winner of the match will advance to take on top-seeded Antigo on Oct. 22.

Division 2

Wittenberg-Birnamwood and Oconto Falls will each compete in Division 2.

Shawano boys soccer team earns No. 7 seed for postseason play

Shawano Community High School’s boys soccer team is the only one in the area that will compete in postseason play.

The Hawks earned a No. 7 seed in Division 2. The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association finalized tournament brackets Wednesday.

Shawano will open the postseason on the road against second-seeded Freedom on Tuesday. Should the Hawks win, they would travel to take on either third-seeded Waupaca or sixth-seeded Winneconne on Oct. 24.

Badgers football team ready to contend again after offseason losses

Wisconsin will open the season without quite as much experience as it expected to have.

Senior quarterback Jack Coan underwent surgery on his right foot last week and is out indefinitely. That means the 16th-ranked Badgers likely will start out their pandemic-delayed, eight-game schedule with redshirt freshman Graham Mertz running the offense.

Weyauwega-Fremont 0

Wittenberg-Birnamwood rolled to a sweep of Central Wisconsin Conference-East Division opponent Weyauwega-Fremont on Tuesday in Weyauwega. The Chargers won by scores of 25-11, 25-11, 25-16.

Lilly Betry totaled 11 assists and five aces for Witt-Birn, while McKenna Foster had 13 digs. Payton Foster chipped in seven assists and Amara Schoepke had seven digs.

Athlete Profile: Larken Betry

Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School senior Larken Betry was hoping to help the football team to a strong season with his play on the field. After a knee injury, however, Betry will instead try to provide moral support from the sidelines.

During the team’s 14-6 victory over Shiocton on Oct. 2, Betry tore his ACL, MCL, LCL and meniscus.

Betry served as a tailback on offense for the Chargers, while playing strong safety on defense.

WIAA board approves track and field rules, non-school competition accommodations

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Board of Control approved two track and field coaches’ recommendations and provided flexibility for non-school competitions during the spring and alternate fall seasons in 2020-21 only at its October meeting Friday.
