UW study: School sports don’t increase COVID-19 cases

A study conducted by the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health concluded participation in high school sports in Wisconsin has not led to an increase in COVID-19 infections among high school student-athletes.

WIAA releases fall state event sites

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association identified the state event hosts for boys and girls cross-country, boys soccer and boys and girls volleyball on Thursday.

The state boys and girls cross-country meets will be held Oct. 31.

Division 1 runners will compete at Arrowhead High School. Division 2 state will be held at Colby High School, while Division 3 runs at Maple Grove Venues in West Salem.

Girls volleyball state is scheduled for Nov. 7.

Top-seeded Wittenberg-Birnamwood was stunned by fourth-seeded Nekoosa in a Division 2 playoff match on Thursday in Wittenberg. Nekoosa rallied for a 18-25, 10-25, 25-18, 25-18, 15-11 win.

Reese Rogowski led Witt-Birn with 19 total kills and two aces. McKenna Foster contributed 31 digs and two aces, while Lilly Betry had 18 assists.

Witt-Birn boys cross-country team qualifies for sectionals

The Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School boys cross-country team posted a second-place finish at the Division 2 Oconto Falls Subsectional on Tuesday at The Patriot Golf Club in Abrams to qualify for sectionals.

Witt-Birn's score of 51 was behind just Tomahawk (39).

Athlete Profile: Khloie Cherek

The Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School volleyball team won the Central Wisconsin Conference-East Division title on Oct. 15. The conference crown was the team’s second straight, a perfect end to a high school career for seniors like Khloie Cherek.

Cherek finished as one of the Chargers top servers this fall. She attempted 81 serves and finished with the top serve percentage (96.3) for any player above 60 serves. She ended the regular season with 41 service points.

Tom Brady outplayed Aaron Rodgers in a rare meeting between the Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers erased an early double-digit deficit to rout the previously unbeaten Green Bay Packers 38-10 on Sunday.

It was the 43-year-old Brady’s first signature victory since signing with the Bucs (4-2) after a historic 20-year run with the New England Patriots.

The Green Bay Packers signed TE Dominique Dafney to the practice squad.

The transaction was announced Monday by Brian Gutekunst, the Packers general manager.­­­

Dafney (6-foot-2, 243 pounds) is a rookie out of Indiana State who spent a brief time in the training camp of the Indianapolis Colts this past August.

He started his college career at Iowa Western Community College (2016) before transferring to the University of Iowa for two seasons (2017-18) and then played one year at Indiana State (2019).

Marinette 27

Shawano rolled to a nonconference victory over Marinette on Friday in Shawano. The Hawks are now 3-1 overall.

After Marinette scored on its first possession, Shawano's Elliott Lowney returned the ensuing kickoff for a score to get the hosts on the scoreboard. Lowney went on to catch a pair of first-half touchdown passes from Gage Timm.

Bonduel girls, Witt-Birn boys 2nd at CWC Cross-Country Championships

The Bonduel girls and Wittenberg-Birnamwood boys cross-country teams each secured second-place finishes at the Central Wisconsin Conference Championships on Thursday in Pittsville.

The Bonduel girls finished with the same score as Amherst (43), but Amherst had the better finish from its sixth runner, so it claimed first. The Witt-Birn boys had a score of 67, behind Pacelli (41).
