Carter Weisnicht scored 38 points to power Shawano to a Bay Conference road win over Green Bay East on Friday.

Weisnicht scored 19 points in each half. The senior knocked down six 3-pointers in the contest.

Nick Sherman chipped in 12 points for the Hawks.

Wittenberg-Birnamwood couldn't keep pace with Shiocton in a Central Wisconsin Conference-East Division matchup on Friday in Wittenberg.

Wrestling: Witt-Birn's Moegenburg, Esker qualify for state

OCONTO FALLS — Chad Moegenburg and Wyatt Esker will represent the Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School wrestling team at state after they each placed second in their weight classes at the Division 2 Oconto Falls sectional Saturday.

Moegenburg, a senior, came in second in the 126-pound weight class. Esker, a junior, took second in the 145 class.

Each wrestler won their first two matches to advance to the first-place match.

Menominee Indian 67

Bonduel took down Menominee Indian in a memorable Central Wisconsin Conference-East Division matchup on Thursday in Keshena.

Bonduel's Cole Letter and Menominee Indian's Norman Kakwitch each surpassed the 1,000-point mark for their high school careers in the contest. Letter made a 3-pointer in the first half to reach 1,000 points, while Kakwitch converted a tough shot despite being fouled to climb over 1,000 points.

Winona State

Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School graduate Maddy Pietz took part in a pair of events for the Winona State women’s track and field team at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Indoor Challenge on Feb. 15 in Mankato, Minnesota.

Pietz finished fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.77 seconds. That finish earned her team four points.

Pietz also placed 19th in the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 4.5 inches.

Marion hung on in the closing seconds for a low-scoring nonconference win over Northeast Wisconsin Christian Homeschoolers Athletic Association on Tuesday in Marion.

Branden Beechy led Marion with 12 points, while Collin Haas chipped in eight. Jared Krueger added seven points.

NEWCHAA missed a deep 3-pointer at the final buzzer.

WITTENBERG — The Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School wrestling team has enjoyed a big season on the mats, from winning Central Wisconsin Conference titles to turning in strong showings at tournaments and invites to advancing seven wrestlers past regionals. Sophomore Damien Wudtke has played a big role in that success.

Wudtke was one of the team’s seven wrestlers to advance past the Division 2 Waupaca Regional on Saturday. Wudtke won the 106 class after a pair of first-period pins.

Austin Gibson hit a 16-foot turnaround jumper as the final seconds ticked away to give Wittenberg-Birnamwood a thrilling nonconference road win over Auburndale on Monday.

Gibson finished with 12 points in the contest, while Logan Balliett added eight points.

Witt-Birn’s Brendan Resch hit six 3-pointers and tallied a team-leading 21 points.

Girls Basketball: Bonduel earns No. 1 seed for postseason

BONDUEL — After an impressive regular season, the Bonduel High School girls basketball was tabbed a No. 1 seed in Division 4 for the WIAA Girls Basketball Tournament.

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association released the girls basketball brackets on Sunday evening.

Bonduel’s top seed also comes with a bye. The Bears will await the winner of the regional quarterfinal between eighth-seeded Manawa and ninth-seeded Oconto.

Bonduel will host the regional semifinal on Friday Feb. 28, and if it wins, the regional final on Saturday, Feb. 29, too.

Seven Shawano wrestlers qualify for sectionals

GREEN BAY — Seven Shawano Community High School wrestlers placed in the top four in their respective weight classes at the Division 1 Green Bay Preble Regional on Saturday to qualify for sectionals.

Shawano earned 125 points as a team to finish sixth at the eight-team regional. The Hawks were unable to secure a first-place finish on the day.

Shawano’s Wyatt Brandt (120), Ben Carroll (152), Keith Tourtillott (220) and Nick Kohn (285) all took second place.

Wittenberg-Birnamwood picked up a Central Wisconsin Conference-East Division road win over Weyauwega-Fremont on Thursday.

Austin Gibson led the way for Witt-Birn, scoring 26 points. Gibson made nine field goals and eight free throws.
Brendan Resch added 15 points for the Chargers, while Logan Balliett tallied 10 points. Jack Fraaza and Simon Stewart each posted eight points.
