Girls Basketball: Witt-Birn’s Fraaza tabbed CWC-East Player of the Year

WITTENBERG — Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School’s Abi Fraaza was tabbed the Central Wisconsin Conference-East Division Player of the Year after stuffing the stat sheet during her junior season on the basketball court.

Fraaza was a unanimous first team all-conference pick after putting up averages of 16.4 points, 10.3 rebounds, 5.7 assists, 3.6 blocks and 2.5 steals per conference game.

Boys Basketball: Letter, Kakwitch make CWC-East first team

KESHENA — Menominee Indian High School senior Norman Kakwitch was named to the Central Wisconsin Conference-East Division first team unanimously after leading the conference in scoring.

Kakwitch averaged 21.8 points per game in CWC-East play, nearly two points more than any other player.

Basketball: Witt-Birn’s Fraaza makes WBCA honorable mention team

WITTENBERG — Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School girls basketball player Abi Fraaza was named to the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association honorable mention team in Division 3 after a big junior season.

“It means so much to me to be able to be named WBCA honorable mention being a junior because with a great support system consisting of my parents, coaches and teammates, all the hard work pays off in the end,” said Fraaza. “But also I am going to keep pushing myself to work harder everyday to achieve the next level of first team all-state next year.”

Youth Swim: WASP wraps up winter season at state meets

PLEASANT PRAIRIE — The Wittenberg Area Swim Program wrapped up its winter season by sending six swimmers to a pair of state meets over the past two weekends.

Olivia Bessette, Rylee Crick, Kelsie Davis, Reese Dickman and Ava Hegewald represented WASP at the Wisconsin 12-and-Under Short Course State Championships from Feb. 28 through March 1 at the Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center in Brown Deer.

Shawano 36

Fifth-seeded Shawano struggled to get things rolling offensively in a Division 2 regional semifinal playoff loss to fourth-seeded New London on Friday in New London.

Carter Weisnicht powered Shawano on offense with 18 points. Nick Sherman chipped in 11 points.

New London will travel to take on top-seeded Hortonville in Saturday’s regional final.

College Highlights (March 5)

Winona State

Wittenberg-Birnamwood graduate and current Winona State sophomore Maddy Pietz claimed 11th place in the 200-meter dash preliminaries at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Indoor Championships on Feb. 28 and 29 in Mankato, Minnesota.

Pietz turned in a time of 25.39 seconds, missing out on the finals.

Menominee Indian 61

Seventh-seeded Bonduel escaped with a tight win over 10th-seeded Menominee Indian in a Division 4 regional quarterfinal playoff matchup on Tuesday in Bonduel. Bonduel outscored Menominee Indian 40-35 in the second half to overcome a three-point halftime deficit.

Cole Letter hit four 3-pointers and scored 20 points to lead Bonduel on the offensive end. Carson Robaidek and Noah Beilfuss each added 12 points, with Beilfuss also hitting four triples.

Athlete Profile: Reese Rogowski

WITTENBERG — The Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School girls basketball team didn’t have a deep roster, relying primarily on its five starters and just a couple players off the bench. Freshman Reese Rogowski was a starter for the team.

Rogowski averaged about five points per game for Witt-Birn, which won a Central Wisconsin Conference-East Division title and advanced to a Division 3 regional final before being eliminated.

The freshman guard also was a strong defender for the team.

Wrestling: Witt-Birn’s Moegenburg ends career on podium

MADISON — Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School wrestler Chad Moegenburg ended his career on the state podium after placing fifth in the Division 2 126-pound weight class at the 77th annual WIAA Individual Wrestling Championship Tournament, which ran Thursday through Saturday at the Kohl Center.

Junior teammate Wyatt Esker also made the podium, placing sixth in the 145 weight class.

Moegenburg posted a 3-2 record for his second-ever podium finish (he placed second in the D3 113 weight class as a sophomore).

Bonduel 71

Crivitz 52

Top-seeded Bonduel rolled to a Division 4 regional title win over fourth-seeded Crivitz on Saturday in Bonduel.

Allaina Robaidek and Kara Troxel each tallied 19 points for Bonduel, while Brenna Hertzfeldt had 11 and Kylie Hoffman 10.

Madison Kurey had five assists, while Troxel grabbed six rebounds. Hoffman had three steals.
