Help shape deer season by joining a County Deer Advisory Council

MADISON — The Department of Natural Resources invites those interested in deer management in Wisconsin to apply for a seat on a County Deer Advisory Council (CDAC).

Council members include representatives from a variety of stakeholder groups interested in whitetail deer management in Wisconsin. The application deadline for all council seats in each county is July 1.

Schwantes to take over Marion/Tigerton football team

Micah Schwantes was tabbed the new Marion/Tigerton football coach, taking over for Lance Litchfield.

Mark Fredy, the Marion athletic director, confirmed the coaching change.

Litchfield, who also served as the Tigerton athletic director, accepted an AD position at Cochrane-Fountain City.

BABA won’t play sanctioned games this summer

The Badger Amateur Baseball Association has canceled the 2020 season because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The league announcement was published on it’s webpage, https://www.bababaseball.com/index.html.

“A number of teams are not allowed to use their parks for group activities; thus, scheduling would have been almost impossible,” stated the BABA.

The BABA did point out that some parks and fields would be available for tournaments or exhibition games, but they wouldn’t be sanctioned by the league.

Miller Park sustains 'minor damage' after break-in

MILWAUKEE — The Milwaukee Brewers say a man illegally entered Miller Park and caused minor damage to the playing field Tuesday morning.

Brewers officials say the man was apprehended by law enforcement shortly after gaining access to the field. Milwaukee police said a 40-year-old man was arrested in the burglary and noted that the incident occurred shortly after 7:30 a.m.

Police said criminal charges will soon be referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office.

Charger Athletic Club honors seniors

WITTENBERG —The Charger Athletic Club recognized 18 seniors who participated and showed leadership through community service projects and other activities during the last few years.

Logan Balliett was in the group for three years, serving as the president this year and vice president in 2018-19. Cole Schairer was in the group four years, serving as the club reporter and trip adviser this year.

DNR’s free summer weekend is June 6-7

MADISON — The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is proud to host the eighth annual Wisconsin Free Fun Weekend. Park admission fees, fishing license and trail pass requirements will be waived June 6-7 to encourage Wisconsinites to take advantage of and enjoy Wisconsin’s outdoors.

During Free Fun Weekend June 6-7:

• No state park admission stickers or trail passes are required.

• People may fish without a fishing license or trout/salmon stamps. All other fishing regulations apply.

Pair of Bowler senior athletes plan to play in college

Bowler High School has two seniors who plan to extend their athletic careers to the college level.

Basketball

After a productive high school basketball career, Kayla Pecore will take her talents to college. She is set to join the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay’s Marinette Campus team.

“It’s really exciting, and I’m so happy that my hard work and dedication has paid off,” said Pecore.

Help protect turtles on the move

MADISON — With a 45% increase in turtle crossing reports in the last year and a growing number of landowners taking action to protect turtle nests from raccoons, state conservation biologists are hopeful for the next generation of these hard-shelled reptiles.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources’ biologists are asking the public to continue reporting turtle crossings online for the DNR’s Wisconsin Turtle Conservation Program.

Natural Resources Board approves 2020 elk harvest quota

MADISON — The Natural Resources Board on Wednesday approved a harvest quota of 10 bulls from the northern elk herd for the 2020 Wisconsin elk hunt, matching the number of tags from the 2019 season. Of the 10 tags, five will be awarded to state hunters, and the Ojibwe tribes will receive an allocation for the remaining five elk, in accordance with treaty rights.
