Brewers trade 2 relievers, acquire SS Adames from Rays

The Milwaukee Brewers acquired shortstop Willy Adames in a multiplayer trade with the Tampa Bay Rays on May 21.

The Brewers also got pitcher Trevor Richards from the Rays for relievers J.P Feyereisen and Drew Rasmussen.

Adames is hitting .197 with five homers and 15 RBIs in 41 games. The 28-year-old Richards has a 4.50 ERA and one save in six relief appearances.

Bonduel girls 1st, boys 2nd at home invitational

The Bonduel High School girls track and field team earned a first-place finish at the May 20 Bonduel Invitational in Bonduel. The Bonduel boys claimed second.

The Bonduel girls accumulated 171.5 points, with Weyauwega-Fremont (110.5) coming in second. Wittenberg-Birnamwood (89) took third, Menominee Indian (49) sixth, Tigerton (26) seventh and Marion (3) eighth.

The Bonduel boys racked up 140 points, behind Amherst (166). Witt-Birn (52) took fifth, with Menominee Indian (14) in sixth.

Bonduel used a pair of five-run innings to take down Menominee Indian in a Central Wisconsin Conference-East Division matchup May 20 in Bonduel.

Bonduel's Abby Stoltenow ended the contest with a two-RBI single in the bottom of the fifth. Stoltenow, Ella Hischke, Julia Lorbiecki, Claire Gehm and Nicole Koeller all reached base twice for the Bears. Nakiyah Henning reached base in all three of her plate appearances.

Embarrass River Rugby Club returns

The Embarrass River Rugby Club is back to activities and competition after taking a year off due to coronavirus concerns.

The rugby club’s governing bodies, Wisconsin Youth Rugby and USA Rugby, offered guidance last spring along with return to play guidelines designed to keep everyone in the game safe from COVID-19. Now that local restrictions are relaxing, area youth are eager to take the field again.

Packers Hall of Fame Inc. to host 50th induction Aug. 28

The 50th Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame Inc. Induction Banquet, which was rescheduled from 2020 until this summer due to the COVID-19 pandemic, has been set for Aug. 28. Tom Konop, president of the Packers Hall of Fame Inc., made the announcement May 19.

The banquet will feature Charles Woodson and Al Harris as the newest inductees into the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame.

Also being honored is Bud Selig as the Bob Harlan Leadership Award recipient and the late Zeke Bratkowski as the Bart and Cherry Starr Recognition Award recipient.

WIAA State Track and Field Championships remain in La Crosse

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association and the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse have agreed to continue planning for the State Track & Field Championships at Veterans Memorial Stadium in La Crosse on June 24-26.

St. Norbert College is hosting a pair of track and field camps this summer.

The college will host a middle school camp (entering grades 6-9) from July 5-8, and then a high school camp (grades 9-12) from Aug. 8-11.

Camps are designed to help young athletes develop their skills, prepare for their upcoming seasons and take their performances to the next level.

Camp participants can choose from individual technique sessions in the sprints, jumps, hurdles, pole vault and throws.

Milwaukee Bucks reserve forward Thanasis Antetokounmpo will miss the start of the playoffs after suffering an avulsion fracture to his right patella tendon in his team’s regular-season finale.

Bucks officials said May 18 that the 28-year-old will be out for at least two weeks and would be evaluated again at that point. Antetokounmpo underwent an MRI after a leg injury had knocked him out of a 118-112 loss at Chicago a night earlier.

The Bucks are the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs and open a first-round series with the Miami Heat on May 22.

Packers sign former Virginia quarterback Kurt Benkert

The Green Bay Packers signed Kurt Benkert on May 17 in their latest attempt to add quarterback depth while MVP Aaron Rodgers’ future with the team remains unclear.

Green Bay has signed both Benkert and Blake Bortles — the No. 3 overall pick in the 2014 draft and former Jacksonville Jaguars starter — over the past week.

Rodgers, who reportedly wants out of Green Bay, and 2020 first-round pick Jordan Love had been the only quarterbacks on the Packers’ roster.

The Packers had brought Benkert and Chad Kelly in for tryouts during the team’s rookie minicamp last week.
