Packers roster moves (Wild Card week)

The Green Bay Packers signed WR Chris Blair, S Innis Gaines and LB Ray Wilborn to reserve/future contracts.

General Manager Brian Gutekunst announced the transactions Dec. 8.

Blair (6-foot-2, 198 pounds) is a rookie out of Alcorn State University. He spent two years at Hinds Community College (Raymond, Mississippi) before playing two years at ASU (2018-19).

BOYS BASKETBALL

Shawano 52

New London 48 (OT)

Shawano earned a Bay Conference victory in overtime over New London on Jan. 8 in New London.

Jacob Landon and Brandon Reed each scored 15 points to lead Shawano on the offensive end. Ethan Schwitzer and Kaleb Lowney each added nine points.

Shawano led 26-18 at halftime, but scored just 13 points in the second half. The Hawks knocked down eight free throws in overtime to come out on top.

Packers to welcome some fans for divisional playoff game

The Green Bay Packers’ divisional playoff game at Lambeau Field will include attendance by season ticket holders in addition to invited frontline health care workers and first responders, the organization announced Jan. 7.

Season ticket holders who opted in this summer for the chance to purchase tickets will receive on-sale information this week via email. Tickets will go on sale online through Ticketmaster only Jan. 12 after the date and time of the divisional matchup is announced by the NFL. No tickets will be for sale through the Packers’ ticket office.

Green Bay proves naysayers wrong

For a second straight year, the Green Bay Packers posted a 13-3 record during the regular season.

This time, that mark was good enough for the top record in the NFC, which gave the Packers the No. 1 seed and the lone conference bye week. The team will get a week to rest up before gearing up for a divisional round playoff game. The only postseason game the Packers won’t play at Lambeau Field will be if the team reaches the Super Bowl.

Bowler boys basketball team eases to win over Phelps

The Bowler High School boys basketball team used a balanced attack and strong 3-point shooting to cruise to a 75-35 nonconference win over Phelps on Jan. 5.

The Panthers were playing in front of no fans and under the direction of assistant coach Matt Brunner.

It was Phelps that opened the game on a 5-0 run before Bowler scored the next 12 points. Senior Logan Thiex and sophomore Emmitt Kietlinksi each hit two shots during the run, while junior Wylee Dodge hit a 3-pointer.

Phelps 35

Bowler eased to a nonconference victory over Phelps on Jan. 5 in Bowler.

Logan Thiex knocked down eight shots and a pair of free throws to score 19 points and lead Bowler. Wylee Dodge hit six 3-pointers and had 18 points.

Emmitt Kietlinski contributed 14 points for the Panthers, while Ashwuut Mohawk had 12.

The Bowler High School girls basketball team has a limited number of players on a young roster. Senior Tynea Johnson is embracing the challenge of leading the team and still enjoying every second of the season.

Johnson is the only senior on the team.

Aaron Rodgers threw four touchdowns, breaking his franchise record for scoring passes in a season, and the Green Bay Packers clinched the No. 1 seed in the NFC by beating the playoff-bound Chicago Bears 35-16 on Jan. 3 in Chicago.

The Packers (13-3) earned a bye while winning their sixth in a row and beat Chicago (8-8) for the 19th time in 22 games, counting the postseason.

The Bears are headed to the playoffs for the second time in coach Matt Nagy’s three years despite the loss because Arizona fell to the Los Angeles Rams. Chicago will be at New Orleans (12-4).
