Amherst 2

Wittenberg-Birnamwood doubled up Amherst in a Central Wisconsin Conference-East Division battle May 25 in Wittenberg.

Jasmin Duranceau earned the win in the circle after working around 10 hits and a pair of walks. Only one of the runs she allowed was earned.

McKenna Metropulos had two hits and a RBI to lead the Chargers at the plate. Emma Herb, McKenna Foster, Abi Fraaza and Emily Niles scored the team's runs.

2021 elk hunt application period closes May 31

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources reminds interested Wisconsin hunters to apply for a 2021 elk tag by May 31.

Each spring, the DNR accepts applications for a once-in-a-lifetime elk harvest tag for the fall hunting season. Collaborative reintroduction efforts have grown Wisconsin’s elk population enough to sustain an annual hunting season since 2018, and hunters with elk tags have had a 93% harvest success rate. The DNR anticipates herd growth again this year.

Packers to present Barber, Christensen, Garcia and Woleske for election to board

The Green Bay Packers will present four candidates for shareholder vote at July’s annual meeting to join the Packers Board of Directors: Michael Barber, James Christensen, Eddie Garcia and Chris Woleske.

The candidate information will be included in proxy information being sent in June to more than 360,000 shareholders in advance of the annual meeting, set for July 26, at 11 a.m. in Lambeau Field. The four candidates were approved by vote of the organization’s board of directors at its quarterly meeting held this week.

Rodgers doesn’t attend Packers’ 1st day of OTAs

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers wasn’t present for the first day of organized team activities May 24, and his future with the team remains uncertain.

Rodgers confirmed in an ESPN interview that he wasn’t at Monday’s session. Although these OTAs are voluntary, Rodgers generally has participated in them in the past.

Rodgers’ decision to stay away comes amid reports that the reigning MVP wants out of Green Bay, where he has spent his entire NFL career. Rodgers was noncommittal about his future during his ESPN interview, but did detail some of his frustrations.

Gresham/Bowler girls track and field team 3rd at invite

The Gresham/Bowler girls track and field co-op placed third at the May 24 Marion Mustang Invite in Marion.

The girls co-op accumulated 87 points, behind Manawa (102) and Shiocton (98). Menominee Indian (54) placed fourth, and Tigerton (18) tied for seventh. Marion also competed but didn’t earn any points.

On the boys side, Manawa (177) took first. Gresham/Bowler (37) came in fourth and Menominee Indian (12) fifth.

Green Bay East/West 0 (5 inn.)

Aidan Berry threw a one-hit shutout to guide Shawano to a Bay Conference win over Green Bay East/West on May 24 in Shawano.

Berry struck out two batters while walking just one. He needed just 54 pitches to get through five innings.

Zac Jurmu tallied three hits and three RBIs while also scoring twice to lead the Hawks at the plate. Zach Erdmann had two hits and two RBIs, while Ashton Henning had two hits and two runs scored. Berry also scored twice.

Bucks capitalize on hot start to roll past Heat in 2nd game of series

When the Milwaukee Bucks conducted a roster makeover in the wake of an early playoff exit, the addition of Bryn Forbes didn’t earn nearly as much notice as some other moves.

Looks pretty good right now.

Forbes made six 3-pointers on his way to 22 points, and the Milwaukee Bucks routed the Miami Heat 132-98 on May 24 for a 2-0 lead in their first-round playoff series.

The 27-year-old Forbes spent his first four seasons with San Antonio, but he signed with Milwaukee in free agency in November.

Leopolis 14

Tilleda 7

Leopolis doubled up Tilleda in a matchup May 23 in Tilleda. Leopolis is now 1-2 overall, while Tilleda dropped to 2-1.

Nick Schoen had three hits and four RBIs to lead Leopolis at the plate. Kasey Kristof also had three hits, while Andrew Kristof, Brandon Laabs, Alex Zimmerman and Ryan Malueg all chipped in two hits.

Laabs struck out 11 batters and picked up the win on the mound.

Witt-Birn boys golf team wins 5-team invitational

The Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School boys golf team turned in the top score at a May 21 invitational at Stevens Point Country Club in Stevens Point.

Witt-Birn ended the nine-hole round with a team score of 166, comfortably ahead of Wisconsin Valley Lutheran (193) and Pacelli (200). Menominee Indian/Gresham (252) placed fourth, with Amherst (314) in fifth.

Ian Resch and Calvin Scheurer each fired rounds of 41 to lead Witt-Birn and finish tied as the top individuals on the day.

Athlete Profile: Jasmin Duranceau

The Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School softball team is putting together a strong season this spring, with senior Jasmin Duranceau serving as the team’s primary pitcher.

Duranceau helped the team to a 5-4 victory over Central Wisconsin Conference-East Division foe Weyauwega-Fremont on May 14. She struck out four batters and didn’t walk any in a complete game effort.
