UW-Eau Claire

Mitch Stegeman, a Suring High School graduate and current track and field athlete for UW-Eau Claire, earned a second-place finish in the men’s decathlon at the NCAA Division III 2021 Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which were held May 27-29 in Greensboro, North Carolina.Stegeman earned 6,952 points in the decathlon, only behind teammate Marcus Weaver (7,510).

Stegeman’s top finish came in the pole vault, where he placed first after clearing 4.9 meters. He claimed second in the discus (39.3 m) and third in the high jump (1.94 m).

Labecki announces retirement from WIAA Deputy Director position

Deputy Director Wade Labecki announced his retirement from the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association, effective Aug. 31, to the WIAA’s Board of Control and Executive Staff on May 26.

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Board of Control approved updates to the COVID-19 pandemic guidelines for the spring tournament series, details of the first-ever state girls wrestling tournament and a fast-tracked conference realignment request at its May meeting on May 25.

Roster transformation by Bucks pays off with sweep of Heat

Milwaukee’s roster transformation started after losing to Miami in last season’s playoffs, one that made the Bucks give themselves a critical look.

So they got bigger. Tougher. More experienced.

And in the playoff rematch with the Heat, they were simply better.

There was no raucous celebration. No histrionics, no big on-court party when the final horn sounded and Milwaukee had officially vanquished its playoff loss to Miami from last season.

Put simply, the Bucks expected to win. And the last four games showed exactly why.

The Bucks, Heat rematch was a mismatch, and Milwaukee became the first team to advance in this season's playoffs by beating Miami 120-103 on May 29 to complete a 4-0 first-round sweep.

Tigerton softball team takes down Marion

The Tigerton High School softball and baseball teams hosted Marion in Central Wisconsin Conference-North Division matchups on May 28 in Tigerton, with the softball team earning a win and the baseball team suffering a loss.

The Tigerton softball team used a late surge to pick up an 11-7 victory, while the baseball team lost 6-5 on a walk-off hit. Tigerton served as the road team for both contests.

Koy Brei singled in Alex Zimmerman in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Marion a walk-off win over Tigerton in a Central Wisconsin Conference-North Division contest on May 28 in Tigerton. Marion served as the home team.

Brei finished the contest with three hits and two RBIs, while Zimmerman and Carter Goke had two hits each. Ryan Malueg doubled twice among his three hits.

Bucks lose DiVincenzo for season with ankle injury

Donte DiVincenzo’s season is over, after tests showed May 28 that the Milwaukee guard tore a ligament in his left ankle during game three of the Bucks’ playoff series against the Miami Heat on May 27.

DiVincenzo had appeared in 69 games for Milwaukee this season, all of them starts including the three playoff matchups. His regular-season averages — 10.4 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists — were all the best of his three-year career.

The Milwaukee Bucks have a chance to sweep the Miami Heat out of the playoffs, and they're making the task of dispatching the reigning Eastern Conference champions look very simple.

Khris Middleton scored 22 points, Jrue Holiday added 19 points and 12 assists and the Bucks took a 3-0 lead in their East first-round series with a 113-84 victory in Miami on May 27.

Giannis Antetokounmpo finished with 17 points and 17 rebounds for Milwaukee, which can finish the sweep and move into the East semifinals with a win Saturday afternoon.

WIAA membership approves 8 amendments to constitution

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association conducted its 125th annual meeting at the Holiday Inn and Convention Center in Stevens Point on May 26.

Among the topics on the association’s business meeting agenda were the voting results of five proposed amendments to the constitution, bylaws and rules of eligibility. Five of the amendments were carried over from last year with the cancellation of the 2020 annual meeting to assist in mitigating the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
