DNR’s free fun weekend this weekend

This weekend is the perfect time to get outdoors and find your adventure in Wisconsin. The Department of Natural Resources is hosting the ninth annual Free Fun Weekend June 5-6. Park admission fees, fishing licenses and trail passes are waived for all visitors.

Wisconsin is home to 49 state parks, 15 state forests, 44 state trails, 84,000 miles of rivers and streams, roughly 15,000 lakes and so much more. Before heading to a state park, trail or waterbody near you, here are some helpful things to know:

LaFleur: Bakhtiari ‘a little bit ahead of schedule’

Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur says All-Pro offensive tackle David Bakhtiari is “a little bit ahead of schedule” in his recovery from a torn anterior cruciate ligament that ended his 2020 season prematurely.

Bakhtiari, 29, injured his left knee at a Dec. 31 practice and didn’t play the remainder of the season. He was working out with other players rehabilitating from injuries during the Packers workout on June 2 as part of organized team activities.

WIAA to conduct associate director position search

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association begins its search for an associate director, formerly named deputy director, to fill the position currently held by Dr. Wade Labecki, who announced his retirement, effective Sept. 1.

Badgers’ Jonathan Davis invited to USA Basketball U19 training camp

Wisconsin sophomore Jonathan Davis has been invited to attend the 2021 USA Basketball Men’s U19 World Cup Team training camp, which will take place June 20-22 on the campus of Texas Christian University.

One of 27 athletes to accept an invite, Davis will compete for a spot on the 12-member team that will represent the USA at the 2021 FIBA U19 World Cup, July 3-11 in Latvia.

Davis becomes the latest in a line of recent Badgers to receive an opportunity to represent USA Basketball.

Shawano 5

Menasha 2

Shawano took down Menasha in a Bay Conference match June 2 in Shawano.

Joe Mente (No. 3) and Carson Cummings (No. 4) each earned singles wins for Shawano. Rory Johnson and Nolan Buck (No. 1), Caden Tetting and Tristan Tetting (No. 2) and Alex Mukka and Leon Mark (No. 3) teamed up for doubles wins, with the No. 2 and 3 matches being decided by forfeit.

Shawano 3

Seymour 1

Shawano defeated Seymour in a Bay Conference battle June 1 in Seymour.

Ashton Henning had three hits, a RBI and a run scored to lead Shawano at the plate. Brandon Bushy belted a two-run home run in the first inning to put the Hawks ahead.

Andrew Popp earned the win on the mound after striking out five batters over 4 2/3 innings. He surrendered just three hits and two walks.

Oconto Falls, Witt-Birn boys golf teams qualify for sectionals

The Oconto Falls and Wittenberg-Birnamwood boys golf teams each qualified for sectionals after competing at the Clintonville Regional on June 1 at Riverside Golf Course in Clintonville.

The top four teams all qualified for sectionals. Oconto Falls came in third with a score of 345, while Witt-Birn was fourth with a mark of 348. Marinette (309) and Peshtigo (324) placed first and second, respectively.

Athlete Profile: Austin Rekow

The Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School baseball team came into the season needing its upperclassmen to step up in order for the team to have chances to win games. Austin Rekow has delivered at the plate and on the mound for the Chargers in his senior season, helping the team to several wins along the way.

Rekow helped the Chargers to a 9-4 win over Bonduel on May 24. At the plate, he drove in two runs on two hits. He also pitched three innings, allowing just two runs.

Block, Van Straten capture first feature wins of season

Memorial Day weekend brought cool temps and hot action to Shawano Speedway for the unofficial start of summer.

Wyatt Block, Travis Van Straten, Nick Anvelink, Tyler Sobiesczyk and Jason Stueck got their summer’s off to the best start of everyone with feature wins.

Early action saw Jerry Wilinski jump to the early lead in the IMCA Modifieds feature and begin to build a big lead. Caution flew on lap four, bringing the field to his bumper. On the restart, Wilinski again scooted away, only to have a debris bring out another caution.

Gresham 13

Tigerton 11

Gresham toppled Tigerton in a high-scoring battle on May 28 in Tigerton.

Brent Berkholtz and Nate Ejnik each tallied three hits for Gresham, with one of Berkholtz’s hits being a home run. Cody Riemer added two hits.

Brett Nelson picked up the win for Gresham, while Paul Sellner took the loss for Tigerton.

Austin Hoffman, Brandon Sivertson and Conner Harris each had two hits for Tigerton.
