It has been a long time since the Chargers had a week one performance like last week, but after rolling Antigo 56-7 to open up their 2023 season, you have to wonder how good this team can be.

The Chargers scored three touchdowns in the first quarter and another three in the second quarter to lead 42-0 at the half. Wittenberg-Birnamwwood scored another TD in each of the third and fourth quarters, while the Red Robins’ only score came in the fourth quarter.

Panthers win ‘Battle of Highway 22’

Oconto Falls won the battle for supremacy along state Highway 22, as the Panthers mauled the Oconto Blue Devils 36-0 on Aug. 18 in the football season opener for both teams.

The hometown Panthers ran over the Devils, amassing 223 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. Junior quarterback Emerich Skarban completed four of seven passes for 113 yards to keep the Oconto defense on its toes.

Raiders too much for Bears in opener

Bonduel senior quarterback Noah Weier passed for 142 yards and one touchdown as the Bears dropped its Aug. 18 season opener, 24-12, to the Two Rivers Raiders in Two Rivers.

The Bears are looking to bounce back from a second round playoff exit last year, but found itself against a team in a similar situation, as Two Rivers lost to Catholic Memorial in the fourth round of the playoffs last season.

The start of the high school football season is an exciting time for everyone, but also one that comes with a ton of mystery and optimism. Many people will tell you that the first game of the season is the most challenging as you never know what to expect.

What makes it even tougher is facing an unfamiliar opponent that not only won their conference last season but advanced to Level 3 in the playoffs last year. Shawano found out first hand how tough that can be as they took on the defending NEC conference champion Little Chute Mustangs only to come away with a 35-0 loss.

Packers drop to 1-1 after 21-17 loss

The Green Bay Packers fell to 1-1 in the preseason Aug. 19, after the team’s second game was suspended in the fourth quarter due to an injury to New England Patriots defensive back Isaiah Bolden.

The game came to an end after Bolden appeared to collide with a teammate that left him seemingly motionless, laying on the ground. Medical staff immediately rushed out to the field to stretcher and cart Bolden off of the field. Bolden was reported by the New England Patriots to have feeling in all extremities and was released from the hospital the next day.

Pulaski opens golf season at Thunder Invite

The Pulaski Raiders opened up a brand new girls golf season, competing Aug. 16 at Crystal Springs for the Thunder Invitational.

Pulaski battled from start to finish as they capped off their rounds of competition with a team score of 413. That put them just five shots behind Fox Valley Association powerhouses Kaukauna and Kimberly, which both shot 408 for a team score. Leading the way and taking home the Invite title was Bay Port with a team score of 361, with Xavier coming in second at 367 and Green Bay Preble in third with 370.

Pulaski tops Shawano in girls tennis

Pulaski topped Shawano 5-2 in a weather-shortened Shawano Quad tennis matchup Aug. 17. Manitowoc Lincoln and Oshkosh North also participated.

Shawano’s two wins came at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. At the No. 2 slot, Ireland Setterman defeated Isabella Skalecki 6-3, 6-4, and at No. 3, Rachael Carroll defeated Alya Groteluschen 6-2, 6-0.

At No. 1 singles, Pulaski’s Ruth Krause topped Adison Moesch 6-2, 6-2, and at No. 4 singles, Pulaski’s Addison Heezen defeated Shawano’s Hadley Rettke 6-2 , 7-6 (1).

Pulaski won all the doubles matches.

Dairyland Highlights (Aug. 25)

Pulaski 0

Waupaca took down Pulaski in a Dairyland League semifinal playoff game on Aug. 20 in Waupaca. The hosts outhit the visitors 10-1.

Davis Levine posted two hits and drove in three of Waupaca’s runs. Walker Smith and Brenden Canterbury tallied two hits each.

Cam Seidl was the winning pitcher, striking out 11 over eight innings. Jack Eagan struck out three batters in the ninth and stranded the bases loaded.

Eland 5

Antigo/Polar doubled up Eland in the Northern Division Finals on Aug. 20 in Eland.

Antigo/Polar finished with 10 hits, with Isaac Bixby, Logan Doering and Cole Shepard all posting two knocks. Will Kubeny clubbed a home run.

Bixby was the winning pitcher, while Tyler Nelson was dealt the loss.

Nelson posted three of Eland’s 12 hits in the contest. Joe Buss and Jeremy Jensen added two hits each.
