Witt-Birn cross-country teams enter fall under different circumstances

WITTENBERG — The Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School boys and girls cross-country teams face different obstacles as the season gets started.

The boys team returns each runner from last year, including four that landed on all-conference teams, so expectations are high. The girls return a pair of all-conference runners, but numbers are down, leaving little room for error.

SHAWANO — With a week of practice under their belts, area volleyball teams are eager to start playing matches.

Despite the graduation of impact players, both Shawano and Gresham appear primed for big seasons on the court with plenty of talented players back. Menominee Indian heads into the year with uncertainty at the head coaching position.

Young Oconto Falls cross-country teams ready to run

OCONTO FALLS — Area cross-country teams opened practice on Aug. 19 in preparation for the fall season.

Oconto Falls heads into the season looking to replace several seniors, while Gillett, Suring and the Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy co-op return most of their runners from last year.

Robbie Ray returned from the injured list and pitched five scoreless innings, Eduardo Escobar and Christian Walker each homered, and Arizona beat Milwaukee to avoid a series sweep on Sunday in Milwaukee.

Ray (11-7) had been out since Aug. 14 due to lower back spasms. He allowed three hits, walked four and struck out six in five innings. The left-hander has thrown 18 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings against the Brewers.

SHAWANO — Nate Michonski and Trent Nolan brought the Shawano Speedway crowd to their feet as the two racers traded paint in the race to the checkered flag in the IMCA Stock Car feature on Saturday. Michonski prevailed for his first win of the year.

Amateur Baseball: Hofa Park tops Bonduel in Dairyland Grand Championship

BONDUEL — Hofa Park rallied from a pair of early deficits and went on for a 7-3 win over Bonduel in the Dairyland League Grand Championship on Sunday at Jack Reinke Field.

It marked the five consecutive title for the Panthers, who won the league’s East Division with a 11-2 record. Hofa Park knocked off Freedom and Marinette to advance to the championship.

Bonduel grabbed the lead by scoring twice in the bottom of the first inning. Luke Kostreva and Matt Scheelk each drove in runs for the Broncos, scoring Chris Blum and J.C. Reinke.

Gillett volleyball team returns starting lineup under new coaches

GILLETT — The Marinette & Oconto Conference will return several 2018 all-conference volleyball players to the court this fall, which in turn should lead to a fun conference race.

Gillett and Lena each return several starters from last year and hope to contend and finish well in the conference.

Gillett returns its entire 2018 starting lineup, but will under new coaches. Erin Buhrandt and Brooke Schaal will serve as co-coaches, replacing Keri Hicks.

Girls Swim: Resch, Bahr lead Witt-Birn at pentathlon

MARINETTE — Wittenberg-Birnamwood swimmers put together another strong day early in the fall season, with several swimmers placing among the best in their classes at the Marinette Pentathlon on Saturday.

Freshman Annika Resch and senior Lauren Bahr each were the top finishers in their grades to lead the Chargers.

Resch finished with a total time of 3 minutes, 13.38 seconds between the 50-yard butterfly (29.9), 50 backstroke (32.39), 50 breaststroke (36.05), 50 freestyle (27.49) and 100 IM (1:07.55). Resch also took first at a pentathlon in Colby to open the season.

Football: Eagles fly past Timberwolves in return to 11-man

KESHENA — It wasn’t a picture perfect start for the Menominee Indian High School football team, but the Eagles didn’t lose hope and eventually pulled away for a 27-12 nonconference win over Living Word Lutheran on Saturday.

The game marked Menominee Indian’s return to 11-man football after spending the previous four seasons playing 8-man.

Senior quarterback Tiger Dixon passed for 327 yards and three touchdowns to lead the charge for the Eagles on offense.

Girls Tennis: Hawks win two matches at invite

WESTON — Shawano earned a 2-1 record while competing at the D.C. Everest Invite on Saturday.

The Hawks lost to Medford, but knocked off Green Bay East and D.C. Everest.

Haley Williams earned wins in all three of her matches, claiming two doubles wins and a singles win. Peyton Buerman, Kate Williams, Elise Pyatskowit, Jillian Black and Chloe Krueger all were a part of two wins.
