Witt-Birn’s Herb tops 1,000 career points in girls basketball team's win over Marathon

Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School’s Emma Herb reached 1,000 points for her career during the team’s 47-33 nonconference win over Marathon on Dec. 29 in Wittenberg.

Herb accomplished the feat on a free throw with less than a minute remaining in the contest. She finished the game with 19 points and also had seven rebounds and three steals.

“It feels pretty good that all my hard work has finally paid off,” said Herb of the milestone. “To have a distinct label that I’ve had a certain achievement is really cool.”

Shawano wrestling team finishes strong in win over Kiel

The Shawano Community High School wrestling team was victorious across the final five weight classes during a rare nonconference dual against Kiel on Dec. 29 in Shawano. The Hawks won 51-26.

Squaring off its first non-Bay Conference opponent, Shawano was locked in a battle with Kiel, which was ranked 10th in Division 2 in the first team rankings put out by wiwrestling.com.

Aubrey DeBauch scored 34 points to power Gillett past Oconto in a clash on Dec. 29 in Gillett.

DeBauch made 11 field goals and added 12 points at the free throw line.

Karissa Schaal added 15 points for the Tigers, while Carleigh Kaczmarek tallied 10 points.

Suring's Kylee Stelzer topped the 1,000-point mark for her high school career, but the team fell short against Wabeno/Laona on Dec. 28 in Laona.

Stelzer, Suring's all-time leading scorer, needed 15 points to reach 1,000 and finished with 20 points.

Paige Krueger added eight points for the Eagles.

Athlete Profile: Avery Dreier

With almost the exact same roster as a winter ago, the Shawano Community High School girls basketball team has turned its experience into more wins on the court, as the team is just three wins short of last year’s total already. Senior Avery Dreier has helped the team to a 5-5 start this season.

Dreier is averaging 11 points and seven rebounds a game for the Hawks.

The senior scored 16 points against Columbus Catholic to help the team win the two-day Cranberry Classic early in the season. She scored 11 points in the team’s season-opening win over Gillett on Nov. 24.

The Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School girls basketball team is off to a strong start in its winter season. Senior Amara Schoepke is doing a little bit of everything to help the team out.

Through the team’s first six games, Schoepke is averaging 5.5 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.2 steals per game.

She scored a season high 11 points in a win over Shiocton on Dec. 4 and tallied nine points in a win over Weyauwega-Fremont on Dec. 14.

The Gillett Secondary School girls basketball team has enjoyed plenty of success over the past couple of seasons. Senior Aubrey DeBauch has been a big reason for the team’s triumphs over those years.

Through Dec. 27, the team has a 5-3 record and right in the thick of the Marinette & Oconto Conference title hunt, with DeBauch leading the team in several statistics.

She’s the team leader in points (14.5) and rebounds (11.4) per game. DeBauch also averages 2.1 assists, 2.9 steals and 1.1 blocks per contest.

Packers rout Titans behind Dillon, Adams

For a second straight week, the Green Bay Packers jumped out to a big lead over an opponent at Lambeau Field. This time around, the Packers kept their foot on the gas and rolled to a 40-14 victory over the Tennessee Titans on a snowy Dec. 27 evening.

After the Packers scored touchdowns on its first three possessions, the Titans got a late score in the second quarter before scoring again to start the third quarter, trimming a 19-0 Green Bay lead to just five.
