Drengler completes milestone in racing

Jasper Drengler, of Shawano, has done what no other race car driver has done before — he has raced on tracks in all 50 states.

In late April, Drengler raced in West Virginia to mark the end of a goal about eight years in the planning.

Drengler has been racing since 2000, but it was only around 2016 or 2017 that he decided to try to race in every state.

“We’ve checked off a whole bunch; let’s go for all of them,” he recalled thinking at the time.

High school football season begins this week

Shawano’s 2023 football season will begin with four non-conference games — Aug. 18 at Little Chute, an Aug. 25 home game against Denmark, Aug. 31 at Fox Valley Lutheran in Appleton and a Sept. 8 home game against Luxemberg-Casco.

Five games in the Bay Conference follow.

Shawano takes second at season-opening golf meet

High school sports are underway, with Shawano and Bonduel girls golf teams taking part in a Bay Conference meet Aug. 10 at Lake Breeze Golf Course, hosted by Winneconne.

Xavier earned top honors with a 165, followed by Shawano with a 192, Winneconne with a 199, Seymour with a 209, West De Pere at 217, Bonduel with a 226 and Green Bay N.E.W. Lutheran ending with a 245.

Emanuel Wilson steals show in Cincinnati

Neopit 3 (10 inn.)

Gresham edged Neopit in extra innings in an East Division divisional playoff game on Aug. 13 in Gresham.

Paul Murphy pitched all 10 innings for Gresham to earn the win, striking out six along the way.

Nate Ejnik led Gresham at the plate with three hits, while Chase Quinney had two.

Alex Peters took the loss on the hill, also pitching 10 innings. Pete Bruette and Mike Pecore posted two hits each.

Bonduel 6

Pulaski rallied to a playoff win over Bonduel on Aug. 13 in Bonduel.

Cody Pangrazzi earned the win on the hill after pitching the final three innings. Drew McDermid started and struck out eight batters over six innings.

Jason Infusino and Ethan Bemowski each homered for Pulaski. Jarrett Olson tied the game with a two-RBI hit.

Bonduel scored four times in the opening inning but was limited to two runs the rest of the way.

Whitman, Springborn score feature wins

Mother Nature provided a beautiful Aug. 12 evening for racing at Shawano Speedway, where the first “Retro Night” was held. Jasper Drengler, Johnny Whitman, Troy Springborn, Trey VanStraten and Tyler Sobiesczyk all came away with feature wins.

In the IMCA Northern Sport Mod feature, pole sitter and former limited Late Model champion Dave Lytie and fellow competitor Andrew Engels — who had his dad’s No. 33 on the side of his normal No. 29 machine — set the pace for what would become a very caution-plagued feature.

Fun with guns brings 350 to event

Evan Guttormson and Ben Klein don’t know each other, but they have at least one thing in common.

They joined more than 350 other competitors at the Wisconsin Sporting Clay Association’s annual state meet, held Aug. 2-6 at J&H Game Farm near Clintonville.

Guttormson lives in Grafton and is a senior at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, where he competes on the school’s trap shooting team.
