Hortonville shuts out Pulaski to open 2023 soccer season

The Pulaski Red Raiders soccer team opened their season by hitting the road to take on the Hortonville Polar Bears on Aug. 22.

Despite a great effort across the board, offense was at a premium in this game. The Polar Bears found a way to score just one goal and made that hold up as Pulaski lost 1-0.

Eggert paces Shawano at Bay Conference meets

Gabi Krause and Kailea Van Der Linden led the Bonduel golf teams with a score of 44, good enough for second place, at the Oconto Scramble on Aug. 25. The duo teamed up for a 44, three strokes off the winning pace.

Raina Dworniczak and Paige Wolf connected for a 47, while Colette DeVeau and Anna Beaumier had a 48.

Madison Sikora and Allison Johnson of Oconto with a 46.

Luxemburg-Casco and Sturgeon Bay also participated.

Shawano posts unbeaten soccer week

The 2023 soccer season couldn’t have gotten off to a much better start for the Shawano Hawks as they posted an unbeaten week in their two games. What started with a low scoring draw with Ashwaubenon on Aug. 23 culminated with a great battle on the road against Mosinee on Aug. 26.

Packers down Seahawks, finish preseason 2-1

A late fourth quarter interception by Packers linebacker Benny Sapp III sealed the books on a 2-1 record in the preseason for Green Bay.

The Packers took down the Seattle Seahawks 19-15 on Aug. 26 in Lambeau Field, as quarterback Jordan Love threw for 63 yards and one touchdown. Seahawks quarterback Drew Lock was the leading passer of the game though, throwing for 150 yards and one touchdown.

Coleman 30, Bonduel 12

When it comes to a non-conference football schedule, the Bonduel Bears may have one of the toughest schedules in the area. Not only did Bonduel face off with a team that landed in Level 4 last year in week one, but Coleman is no slouch either as they made Level 3 playoffs last season. The end result was a loss by the Bears on Aug. 24 as they fell to 0-2 on the season.

Waupaca tops Hortonville in Dairyland title game

The Waupaca Lakemen won the Dairyland League championship after defeating Hortonville 3-0 on Aug. 27 in Waupaca.

Waupaca outhit Hortonville 5-2 in the contest, scoring once in the fourth and twice in the eighth to prevail.

Walker Smith gave Waupaca the lead in the fourth with a single, scoring Jake Pankratz. Luke Behm clubbed a two-run home run in the eighth, plating Eric Brehmer ahead of him.

Little Falls 2

Antigo/Polar doubled up Little Falls in one of the BABA semifinal playoff games on Aug. 27 in Little Falls.

Jed Weix and AJ Kirsch each posted two hits for Antigo/Polar. Will Kubeny drove in a pair of runs.

Kirsch also picked up the win on the mound, striking out five batters over 7⅓ innings.

Chris Dunn took the loss on the hill. He struck out eight batters over nine innings. Kyle Finger led the team at the plate with a pair of hits.

Springborn wins Dirt King Late Model feature

Shawano’s own Troy Springborn won the 25-lap Dirt Kings Late Model Tour Kings Classic race on Aug. 26 at Shawano Speedway.

Jayden Schmidt was the top finisher in the IMCA Modified feature, while Logan Fleischman prevailed in the IMCA Sport Mod race. Travis VanStraten won another IMCA Stock Car feature and Taylor Junk placed first in the Might 4 class.

Springborn’s win in the Kings Classic was a tight one, as he edged Terry Casey by 0.045 seconds. Springborn started in sixth position.

‘Maturity and consistency’ key to strong offense

It is no secret that Green Bay’s offense has a lot of questions marks, but according to offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich, those questions start to get answered through growth.

Currently on the depth chart, there is one combined start in the quarterback room and the most experienced wide receiver has just one year.
