Exceeding expectations

Following two consecutive seasons out of the playoffs and a coaching change, the expectations weren’t high for the Green Bay Packers with an over-under set at 9.5 wins.

Much of the offseason conversation revolved around not wins and losses, but Aaron Rodgers and his young new head coach, Matt LaFleur. How would they co-exist? How quickly would the offense adapt to LaFleur’s scheme? Would the free-agent additions lead to a difference-making defense?

GREEN BAY — The first time the Green Bay Packers formally gathered in the spring, new coach Matt LaFleur presented the goal of reclaiming the NFC North.

Division titles are standard preseason talking points around the NFL, and for the past quarter-century they’ve been the minimum expectation for the Packers. Considering their two primary rivals won the NFC North the past two years, though, this was a bold objective under a new coaching staff with so many inexperienced players at the offensive skill positions.

NFL: Packers beat Vikings, win NFC North

MINNEAPOLIS — Aaron Jones rushed for 154 yards and two second-half touchdowns, Za'Darius Smith had five tackles for loss to lead a stifling performance by Green Bay's defense, and the Packers became NFC North champions by beating the Minnesota Vikings 23-10 on Monday night.

College Volleyball: Plummer leads Stanford past Wisconsin in NCAA title game

PITTSBURGH — The NCAA women’s volleyball world had no answer for Stanford outside hitter Kathryn Plummer. Now, it won’t need one.

Plummer finished off her Cardinal career Saturday night, hammering 22 kills to lead Stanford past Wisconsin, 25-16, 25-17, 25-20 in the NCAA women’s championship match.

The championship was the second straight for Plummer and Stanford and third over the last four years. Stanford (30-4) won its ninth title, going back-to-back for the second time in program history. Wisconsin (27-7) has never won a title, falling to 0-3 in NCAA finals.

Witt-Birn wins Battle of the Fox

Wittenberg-Birnamwood had five wrestlers place first to help the team win the Battle of the Fox on Saturday in Appleton.

Damien Wudtke (106), Pierson Potrykus (113), Chad Moegenburg (126), Bryze Zoromski (138) and David Gauderman (195) were the Witt-Birn wrestlers that placed first after undefeated days on the mat.
