Boys Basketball: Strong defense helps Eagles past Wildcats

GRESHAM — The Menominee Indian High School boys basketball team ramped up its defensive pressure to pull away from Gresham in a Central Wisconsin Conference crossover battle on Tuesday.

Menominee Indian went on for a 77-55 victory in the season opener for both teams.

The game was a back-and-forth battle in the early stages of the game. Gresham pulled out to a 7-3 lead before Menominee Indian grabbed a 12-9 advantage.

The Wildcats tied the game on a 3-pointer from senior Waylon Welch before the Eagles turned up their defensive intensity.

Menominee Indian’s defensive pressure was too much for Gresham to handle in a Central Wisconsin Conference crossover battle in Gresham on Tuesday.

Menominee Indian had four players score in double figures, led by Norman Kakwitch’s 16 points. Allen Smith chipped in 15 points, while Menom Powless had 14 and Tiger Dixon 11. Mariano Lyons and Raymond Fish each tallied eight points.

Deer harvest numbers from opening weekend down

MADISON — More than half a million hunters purchased licenses to enjoy opening weekend of Wisconsin’s 168th gun deer season.

As of midnight Nov. 24, preliminary figures indicate that the number of deer hunters in Wisconsin is near par with last year.

Sales for gun, bow, crossbow, sports and patron licenses reached 782,815 as of midnight Sunday. Of that total, 555,227 were for gun privileges only. This number includes gun, patron and sports licenses.

College Football: Taylor leads Badgers past Purdue

MADISON — Jonathan Taylor will have a major decision to make in a few weeks: To stay or not to stay.

In the meantime, the junior All-America running back is taking the time to appreciate every remaining moment he has in a Wisconsin uniform.

Taylor ran for 222 yards — the 12th time he’s eclipsed the 200-yard mark in his career — and a touchdown, and No. 14 Wisconsin beat Purdue 45-24 on Saturday in the Badgers’ final home game of the season.

After the victory, Taylor walked around Camp Randall Stadium and thanked the home fans for their support.

Boys Soccer: Shawano‘s Klement makes Bay first team

SHAWANO — Shawano Community High School’s Michael Klement and Ethan Schwitzer each earned all-conference honors after strong seasons on the soccer field this fall.

Klement made the Bay Conference first team in his senior season, while Schwitzer, a sophomore, was an honorable mention selection.

Klement made the all-conference list as a forward. He led Shawano by scoring 27 goals and also assisted on six other goals.

Boys Basketball: Bonduel turning to new leaders

BONDUEL — The Bonduel High School boys basketball will be turning to a new cast of players this winter as it gets its season underway.

The Bears, who are coached by Duke Copp, are coming off a 14-9 season and an 8-4 run through the Central Wisconsin Conference-East Division, but have to replace several players from that team. Parker Bohm, the reigning player of the year in the CWC-East, is among those players.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Aaron Rodgers dropped back on his first third down of the day, tried to avoid the pressure and got stripped on a sack that set up an early San Francisco touchdown and set the tone for the game for the Green Bay Packers.

A matchup between two of the NFC’s top teams was a complete mismatch in large part because San Francisco’s stellar defense forced Rodgers into one of the worst performances of his career.

Mimi Beaulieu-Morgan broke a Menominee Indian record while leading the team to a Central Wisconsin Conference crossover win over Bowler on Friday.

Beaulieu-Morgan hit 10 3-pointers, a new school record, and scored 33 points overall.

Packers eager for primetime showdown win 49ers

GREEN BAY — The Green Bay Packers used their bye week to rest up and recover from some injuries sustained in the first 10 weeks of the NFL season.

When the players returned to Green Bay to begin preparation for week 12, they set their sights on what arguably is the team’s biggest game of the season so far, a Sunday night battle with the San Francisco 49ers.

The game could prove big when it comes time to seed teams for the postseason.
