Wittenberg-Birnamwood pulled away in the second half to claim a Central Wisconsin Conference-East Division victory over Menominee Indian on Thursday in Wittenberg.

Abi Fraaza powered Witt-Birn to the win, totaling 30 points, 12 rebounds and four assists. She made 12 shots from the floor and added five free throws.

Emma Herb tallied 16 points for the Chargers, while Reese Rogowski had 11 points and six steals. Olivia Curley added seven points.

Hockey: Shawano co-op rolls past Green Bay United

SHAWANO — The Shawano varsity reserve hockey co-op rolled to a 10-2 victory over Green Bay United on Thursday at the Crawford Center.

Ryan Wegenke led the way for the co-op, scoring four goals and adding five assists. Andrew Puissant also turned in a big game for the hosts, scoring three goals and assisting on three other scores.

Johnny Dillenburg, Leland Jones and Noah Kiefer all added a goal for Shawano. Dillenburg was also credited with four assists. Lammers and Jones had two assists each, while Luke Alvarez also recorded an assist.

Free agent pitcher David Phelps, Brewers reach 1-year deal

MILWAUKEE — The Milwaukee Brewers signed free agent pitcher David Phelps to a one-year contract Thursday with a club option for 2021.

The 33-year-old right-hander was a combined 2-1 with one save and a 3.41 ERA in 41 games for Toronto and Cubs last season. The reliever was traded by the Blue Jays to Chicago in late July.

Phelps missed the 2018 season because of Tommy John surgery after injuring his elbow in spring training. He is 32-34 with six saves and a 3.86 ERA in seven seasons with the New York Yankees, Miami, Seattle, Toronto and the Cubs.

Winona State

Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School graduate Maddy Pietz continued to rack up top finishes for the Winona State women's track and field team, this time at the Stout Open on Jan. 25 in Menomonie.

Pietz placed first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.79 seconds.

She posted a time of 7.88 seconds in the 60 dash preliminaries to qualify for the finals, where she posted a mark of 7.85 seconds to finish third.

NBA changing All-Star Game format, adding a Kobe tribute

CHICAGO — Kobe Bryant's final jersey number will be something this year's NBA All-Stars play to reach.

The NBA announced major changes to the All-Star format on Thursday, turning every quarter into a mini-game for charity before an untimed final quarter with a target score that will decide which team wins. Scores will be reset back to 0-0 at the start of the second and third quarters, then restored to begin the fourth quarter.

Packers name Jerry Gray new defensive backs coach

GREEN BAY — The Green Bay Packers named Jerry Gray defensive backs coach. Coach Matt LaFleur made the announcement Wednesday.

Gray is entering his 33rd season in the National Football League, having played for nine seasons and coached for the past 23. He joins the Packers after spending the previous six years coaching defensive backs for the Minnesota Vikings, where he tutored All-Pro cornerback Xavier Rhodes and safety Harrison Smith.

Brewers’ Urías recovering from surgery on left hand

MILWAUKEE — New Brewers shortstop Luis Urías could miss the start of the season after he had surgery Tuesday to repair a broken bone in his left hand.

Urías will be sidelined for about eight weeks. He is expected to make a full recovery with no lingering effects, but general manager David Stearns said he is questionable for opening day March 26 against the Chicago Cubs.

Wisconsin guard Kobe King to transfer

MADISON — Kobe King, the second-leading scorer at Wisconsin, said Wednesday he intends to transfer out of the program.

King, a redshirt sophomore guard, announced his decision on Instagram, two days after he did not travel with the team for a game at Iowa. The move appeared to take coach Greg Gard by surprise.

Girls Basketball: Shawano falls flat in home loss

SHAWANO — Fresh off a big Bay Conference win over Xavier on Friday, the Shawano Community High School girls basketball team suffered a letdown in its nonconference matchup with Waupaca on Tuesday, falling 62-48.

Shawano worked out to a seven-point lead in the first half, but was outscored 17-3 before heading to the locker room. The Hawks were unable to flip the momentum in the second half and Waupaca was able to leave the gym with its first win since its season opener on Nov. 19.

Shawano coach Ryan Koenig took the blame after the game.
