Bay Conference Mini-Meet #3

Aug. 22

Sophia Eggert tied as the medalist with a 43 as Shawano won the Bay Conference Mini-Meet #4 at Shawano Lake Golf Course on Aug. 22.

The Hawks shot a 190, while Bonduel carded a 256 for seventh place.

Also scoring for Shawano were Lily Glysch with a 45, Madilyn Moesch with a 47 and Delanie Kunze with a 55.

Bonduel was led by Morgan Staszak’s 59. Also contributing were Paige Wolf at 62, Hailey Spates at 63 and and Leah Court at 72. Quinn Hartlaben scored a 73.

Hacker wins Mighty 4s feature race

Lucas Hacker was the only Shawano driver to collect the checkered flag in a feature race Aug. 24 at the Shawano Speedway.

Hacker won the 15-lap Mighty 4s feature after starting on the pole. He was followed by Dalton Nelson of Shawano and Tanner Westphal of Clintonville in second and third, respectively.

Westphal won the first heat, and Hacker won the second.

In the IMCA modifieds feature, it was Marcus Yarie of Wausau crossing the line first. Konnor Wilinski of Seymour placed second, with Mike Schmidt of Shawano in third.

Bonduel, Oconto Falls win cross-county games

Bonduel 28, Wittenberg-Birnamwood 19

The Bears won their season opener 28-19 over Wittenberg-Birnamwood.

Bonduel was scheduled to travel to Coleman on Aug. 29, while the Chargers are set to host Tomahawk on Aug. 30.

Oconto Falls 46, Oconto 8

Oconto Falls scored all of its 46 points in the first half as they routed Oconto 46-8 on the opening night of the 2024 season.

Shawano tennis team roughed up at Preble Invite

Green Bay Preble Invite

Aug. 22-23

Shawano tennis wrapped up a big week in Green Bay with the Preble Invite on Aug. 22-23.

Rachael Carroll led the Hawks at No. 2 singles with a 4-0 performance for the two-day tournament. The tennis players played competitive matches but were unable to come up with the team win.

Manitowoc Lincoln 5, Shawano 2

Carroll won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, and Laney Rich won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.

Heart of the Valley Metro Championship

Aug. 19

Shawano golfers placed third out of 18 teams at the Hearth of the Valley Championship at High Cliff Golf Course on Aug. 19. The Hawks scored 165 and tied Appleton North and Kaukauna 2. Kaukauna 1 won with a 147, followed by Kimberly 1 with a 164.

Sophia Eggert and Lily Glysch won in a playoff to take third as a team in a three team-two person scramble/best ball. They scored a 75, there strokes behind two other duos who each scored a 72.

Sophia Eggert was the medalist with a score of 37 as Shawano golfers took first place at Vernon Hills Golf Course in Oconto.

The Hawks scored 180, followed by Seymour with 183.

Pulaski shuts out Appleton East, Kaukauna

Pulaski’s girls tennis team easily defeated its three opponents Aug. 19 at Appleton West.

The Red Raiders downed the host school 6-1 and then shut out Appleton East and Kaukauna by 7-0 scores.

Pulaski 6, Appleton West 1

Against Appleton West, Pulaski won three of the four singles matches. Ruth Krause, at No. 1, won 6-1,6-1; No. 2 Aubrie Schluessler won 6-4, 6-1; and No. 4 Anna Krause won 6-7 (3), 7-5 , 11-9.

Appleton West’s Ella Reetz beat Pulaski’s Isabella Skalecki, No. 3, 6-2, 6-7 (7), 10-5.

‘Recycled’ squirrel tails become fishing lures

Most of us have been recycling glass, plastic, cardboard, paper and other materials for decades.

An Antigo business that makes world-renowned fishing lures “recycles” squirrel and deer tails to dress their spinners.

A few local high school sports teams have already started competitive play, with the opening night for football coming Aug. 23.

Five teams will take to the field for non-conference action, with all games beginning at 7 p.m.

Scheduled games include Shawano hosting Denmark, Bonduel hosting Wittenberg-Birnamwood, Pulaski hosting Oconomowoc and Oconto Falls traveling to Oconto.

Local teams playing 8-player football will first play Aug. 29, again with all games starting at 7 p.m.

Little Falls, Eland advance to BABA semifinals

The semifinals in the Badger Amateur Baseball Association have been set following a series of close games Aug. 18.

In the semifinals, Little Falls will travel to Eland and Clintonville will be at Scandinavia, with both games beginning at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 25.

Little Falls 3, Caroline 0

In the West Division final, it was Little Falls shutting out Caroline 3-0.

Chris Dunn was the winning pitcher, lasting nine innings, striking out 13 and allowing three hits.
