Upperclassmen ready to lead Shawano softball team to strong season

The Shawano Community High School softball team has high expectations going into the spring season despite losing four of its six all-conference players from a couple seasons ago.

The last time the Hawks took the field in 2019, the team finished in the middle of the Bay Conference standings. Six players received all-conference nods, but only seniors Taylor Johnson and Naomi Wynos remain from that group.

Johnson earned a spot on the first team, while Wynos was an honorable mention.

Familiar faces leading charge for Shawano track and field team

The Shawano Community High School track and field team will be led by a number of familiar faces as it prepares for its first season under head coach Erin Cornelius.

Cornelius was set to coach in 2020 before the coronavirus pandemic wiped out the spring season.

Shawano graduated both of the athletes that represented the school at state in 2019, but a number of others that qualified for sectionals are back in the mix and ready to pick up where they left off.

Bonduel boys looking for golfers to step up

The Bonduel High School boys golf team heads into the spring season with plenty of questions to answer.

The last time the Bears competed in 2019, the group placed fourth in the Central Wisconsin Conference. When Bonduel competed at regionals that year, the team included two juniors and two seniors, who have all now graduated.

The lone member of the five-golfer team back this spring is junior Cooper Uelmen.

For that reason, coach Dave LaBerge knows there might be a bit of a learning curve at first.

The Shawano Community High School boys golf team enters the spring season hoping to pick up where it left off a couple springs ago.

Coach Dean Kugler believed he had one of the better teams in the Bay Conference last spring, but the group was never given the chance to compete. Now, it will be up to the promising freshmen and sophomores from a couple seasons ago to guide the team.

Forming the core of the team will be seniors Andrew Puissant and Lucas te Plate and juniors Kaden Marcell and Owen Moesch. “They could be as good a foursome as any in the area,” said Kugler.

Peralta will begin season in Brewers’ starting rotation

Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Freddy Peralta has earned a spot in the starting rotation after pitching primarily in relief last year.

Brewers manager Craig Counsell said March 25 that Peralta will get a starting assignment and that Josh Lindblom will work out of the bullpen to begin the season.

Counsell cited Peralta’s performance in an exhibition game March 21 against the Seattle Mariners as an example of the 24-year-old’s progress. Peralta struck out five and gave up one run in 4 2/3 innings that day. That’s the only run he’s allowed over 8 1/3 preseason innings.

Brewers release pitchers Brad Boxberger, Jordan Zimmermann

The Milwaukee Brewers released pitchers Brad Boxberger and Jordan Zimmermann as the team works to narrow down its season-opening roster.

Brewers president of baseball operations David Stearns says he hopes to keep both pitchers by signing them to minor league contracts and sending them to the organization’s alternate site in Appleton.

“I think both of them have positive experiences here in camp,” Stearns said March 26 at the club’s spring training site in Phoenix. “I think both of them feel good about the organization. I’m hopeful. But we’ll leave it at that.”

Wisconsin hires ex-Cowboys assistant Gary Brown to coach RBs

Former Dallas Cowboys running backs coach Gary Brown is returning to football after a one-year, health-related absence and taking the same position at Wisconsin.

Wisconsin announced the hire March 25.

Brown coached Cowboys running backs from 2013-19 while working on a staff headed by Jason Garrett, who was forced out after the 2019 season. Brown spent 2020 out of coaching while he battled cancer.

He now moves into the college ranks and takes over for John Settle, who left to become Kentucky’s running backs coach.

4 Lena wrestlers make M&O all-conference list

The Lena and Gillett/Suring wrestling teams each had multiple athletes recognized by the Marinette & Oconto Conference.

The conference did not break the all-conference wrestlers down between a first, second and honorable mention team, instead releasing one list.

Lena

Senior Kevin Chang and the sophomore trio of Dylan Comins, Sam Marquardt and Luke Misco were named to the all-conference list for Lena.

Gresham 3

Bowler 0

Gresham eased to an alternate fall season win over Bowler on March 25 in Bowler, winning by scores of 25-16, 25-14, 25-15. Gresham is now 6-1 on the season.

Valarie Cerveny tallied 19 service points and 10 kills to lead Gresham. Hannah Cerveny added 22 assists and 15 digs, while Makayla Belongia had nine kills.

Witt-Birn’s Fraaza, Herb, Gillett’s DeBauch named to WBCA all-star rosters

Wittenberg-Birnamwood’s Abi Fraaza and Emma Herb and Gillett’s Aubrey DeBauch were all named to Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Game rosters.

Fraaza and Herb will be part of the Division 4 North team, while DeBauch plays for the Division 5 North team.

“I’m honored to have been selected to this game and to have the opportunity to play,” said DeBauch. “I’m super excited and definitely looking forward to playing the sport I love with the best girls in the state. It means a lot to me, and I think it’ll be an incredible experience.”
