Brewers’ Yelich eager for fresh start after 2020 struggles

Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich has never believed the results of one season have any carryover effect into the next year.

He didn’t think that when he was coming off an MVP season in 2018 or a second straight batting title in 2019. Nor does he feel that way that now as he tries bouncing back from the most disappointing season of his career.

Gresham boys basketball team's rally falls short in sectional final

The Gresham High School boys basketball team’s valiant second-half comeback effort came up short in a 84-66 Division 5 sectional final loss to the Green Bay N.E.W. Lutheran co-op on Feb. 27 in Green Bay.

Third-seeded Gresham had difficulty rebounding against the top-seeded Green Bay NEW Lutheran co-op, which used its size to its advantage. When Green Bay wasn’t scoring in the paint, it was grabbing offensive rebounds to get second and third chances at scoring on the possession.

Bonduel's Troxel named CWC-East girls basketball Player of the Year

Bonduel’s Kara Troxel enjoyed a strong high school basketball career, helping guide the Bears to plenty of wins and various titles along the way.

The senior ended her career with her biggest individual feat yet after being named the Player of the Year in the Central Wisconsin Conference-East Division.

Prentice 55

Third-seeded Gresham rolled to a Division 5 sectional semifinal victory over second-seeded Prentice on Feb. 25 in Prentice. Gresham led 38-24 at halftime.

Jake Hoffman scored 17 points for Gresham, while Belasaire Vele and Austin Sperberg added 15 points each.

Will Jensen and Lukas Pecore each chipped in 10 points for the Wildcats.

Bonduel wrestling coach Chris Rank retires

Bonduel High School wrestling head coach Chris Rank has decided to call it a career, retiring after 30 years on the coaching staff.

“Coaching all these years has been an incredible journey for me and my family. I have been truly blessed,” said Rank.

Family helped introduce Rank to wrestling when he was in high school and kept him in the sport on several occasions throughout his coaching career.

Cain has no regrets about opting out last season

Milwaukee Brewers center fielder Lorenzo Cain has no regrets about opting out of nearly the entire 2020 season but realizes his long layoff could create some obstacles now that he’s back.

“Definitely the right choice, 100% it was the right choice,” the 2018 All-Star and 2019 Gold Glove winner said Feb. 24 from the Brewers’ spring training site in Phoenix. “No doubt in my mind. I would do it again in a heartbeat.”

George Oudhuis named 23rd member of Packers Fan Hall of Fame

George Oudhuis of Rolling Prairie, Indiana, was named the 23rd member of the Green Bay Packers Fan Hall of Fame on Feb. 24.

Oudhuis was selected by fans from 10 finalists during a voting period that ran from Jan. 1-31 on packers.com. More than 71,800 votes were cast from throughout the United States and countries around the world.

Bonduel’s Robaidek makes CWC-East boys basketball 1st team unanimously

Bonduel High School senior Carson Robaidek ended his career on a high note after being named to the Central Wisconsin Conference-East Division first team unanimously.

Robaidek averaged a team-leading 14.7 points, 4.7 assists and 2.4 steals during CWC-East play for Bonduel. He also averaged 6.2 rebounds per game.

“Winning first team all-conference unanimous really means a lot to me because of the work I put in this offseason,” said Robaidek. “Also, it really means a lot because it shows that the other coaches in the conference respect me and the way I play.”

Travis Shaw returns to Brewers with minor league deal

Travis Shaw is back in Milwaukee to give the Brewers one more option for their unsettled situation at third base.

The Brewers announced Feb. 23 that Shaw has signed a minor league contract that includes an invitation to major league camp.

“I think he fits into a need that we have,” Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. “He has an opportunity to earn something. That’s how it was presented to Travis, and I think that’s what excited him about the opportunity.”

Ex-Wisconsin receiver Cephus sues school over 2018 expulsion

Former Wisconsin wide receiver Quintez Cephus said in a lawsuit filed Feb. 23 against the university that he was used as a scapegoat during a sexual assault investigation that resulted in his temporary expulsion.

Cephus seeks unspecified damages in his lawsuit filed in federal court in Madison, accusing the defendants of violating his due process rights, violating Title IX provisions and breach of contract.
