Alvarez joins minority coaching mentorship program

Wisconsin’s Director of Athletics and Hall of Fame football coach Barry Alvarez announced his retirement earlier this month, but that certainly doesn’t mean his involvement with collegiate athletics will end.

Alvarez has partnered with the National Coalition of Minority Football Coaches to participate in a new mentorship program called the Coalition Academy.

The Coalition Academy will connect 12 coaches with influential administrators like Alvarez to help “advance the next generation of minority head coaches.”

Menominee Indian baseball team needing players to step up

The Menominee Indian High School baseball team has a few experienced players to turn to this spring, but will also need some newcomers to step up in order to be competitive.

“After a long period of no baseball I would hope we can come together as a team and win a few games in the process,” said Menominee Indian coach Karl Peters.

Senior Jamison Besaw and juniors Wendell Waukau Jr. and Bryce Dixon are all experienced varsity players Peters can turn to this spring. All three players can play anywhere on the diamond.

Gresham/Bowler 1

The Gresham/Bowler co-op dropped an alternate fall season match to Gibraltar on April 15 in Gresham.

Gibraltar scored two early goals in the first half before Gresham/Bowler settled in. The visitors added another goal in the second half off a corner kick to make it 3-0.

Gresham/Bowler continued to battle until the final whistle, taking advantage of a penalty kick in the waning minutes. Adin Brei scored the goal for the co-op.

Shawano girls soccer team ready to build under new coach

The Shawano Community High School girls soccer team is eager to get back on the field and begin building under a new coaching staff.

Emily Stepanek is the team’s new coach. She and assistant coach Walter Moesch are both entering their first seasons as coaches at Shawano.

Consistency of starting rotation carrying Brewers early

Corbin Burnes always sensed the Milwaukee Brewers were on the verge of producing an exceptional starting rotation.

It just took some time to put it all together.

Burnes now is the hottest pitcher in a rotation that has produced a remarkable run of consistency in the first two weeks of the season. As of April 14, Brewers starters had worked at least five innings while allowing no more than one run in eight consecutive games, the longest such streak in franchise history.

Gresham volleyball team claims regional title before sectional semi loss

The Gresham Community High School volleyball team claimed an alternate fall season Division 2 regional title before being eliminated in a sectional semifinal match in the postseason.

Top-seeded Gresham took on fourth-seeded Elcho in a regional semifinal on April 10 in Gresham. The Wildcats had little trouble on their way to a 25-10, 25-7, 25-14 sweep.

Valarie Cerveny finished with 18 service points, while Hannah Cerveny had 15 service points and 19 assists. Chloe Bohl had 14 kills for the Wildcats, and Makayla Belongia added eight kills.

Menominee Indian track and field team ready for season behind talented returners

The Menominee Indian High School track and field team prepares for the spring season with high hopes as a number of experienced and talented athletes are back on the roster.

All of those returning athletes are girls, while the boys will be searching for some athletes to step up and lead the way.

“Our expectations for 2021 are high,” said coach Corey Webster. “The Eagles track team have most of the team returning with a lot of younger athletes. The returners along with the addition of the long-distance runners will help the Eagles track team in 2021.”

Marion golf team sets sights on individual goals with young roster

The Marion High School golf team has a couple experienced golfers on the roster this spring, but it is otherwise a pretty young and inexperienced group.

Senior Ellen Radies and junior Isaiah Gueths are the golfers back with the most varsity experience for coach Micah Schwantes. Radies was the team’s top finisher at regionals a couple springs ago.

“Having only two returning players from two years ago, it will be the inexperience of the team and teaching the new golfers the game of golf that will be the challenge,” said Schwantes.

Gresham volleyball team eliminated in sectional semifinal

The Gresham Community High School volleyball team was eliminated from the alternate fall postseason after a Division 2 sectional semifinal loss to Algoma on April 13 at Elcho High School.

Algoma won by scores of 25-20, 25-19, 21-25, 25-6.

The first couple sets were back-and-forth battles between the two teams.

Gresham was able to build a six-point advantage in the opening set and led 16-10 before Algoma used a 8-0 run to surge ahead. Algoma ended the opening set on a 15-4 run.

Turnovers and penalties hurt Menominee Indian in an alternate fall season game against Deerfield on April 10 in Deerfield.

The hosts had a 63-yard interception return touchdown late in the first half to make it 12-0 at halftime. Four turnovers and five penalties from Menominee Indian helped Deerfield pull away in the second half.
