Caufield wins Hobey Baker Award, scores twice in pro debut

Wisconsin forward Cole Caufield won the Hobey Baker Award on April 10 as the top college hockey player, then he scored twice in his professional debut.

Caufield edged North Dakota forward Shane Pinto and Minnesota State goaltender Dryden McKay for the award.

He also had an assist in the Laval Rocket’s 5-3 victory over the Toronto Marlies in an American Hockey League game.

Gresham volleyball team tops Tigerton in regional title match

The Gresham Community High School volleyball team defeated Elcho and Tigerton to claim a Division 2 regional title on April 10 in Gresham.

Gresham, the No. 1 seed in its pod, opened the alternate fall season postseason with a sweep of Elcho. The Wildcats dominated, winning by scores of 25-10, 25-7, 25-14.

The win advanced Gresham into the regional title match, where second-seeded Tigerton awaited.

Tigerton claimed the first set, but Gresham stormed back, winning the final three sets to win the regional title. The Wildcats won by scores of 17-25, 25-17, 25-16, 25-20.

Shawano boys tennis team looking to few upperclassmen to lead otherwise young roster

The last time the Shawano Community High School boys tennis team was in action in 2019, the roster was headlined by upperclassmen.

After missing all of 2020, the Hawks now head into the spring season with plenty of lineup spots up for grabs.

“I am not sure how we are going to perform this year,” said Shawano coach Matt Zoll. “With many limitations on gathering in the summer and the challenges for preparing in the offseason, it is difficult to predict how we will fare. We have great kids that come out for tennis, and we are going to work hard to be able to compete.”

Spring hearing begins April 12 at 7 p.m.

The Wisconsin Conservation Congress and Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is reminding Wisconsinites the annual Spring Hearings begin online at 7 p.m. April 12.

The public will have the opportunity to provide input on the proposed natural resources rule changes from the DNR, and advisory questions from the Natural Resources Board and WCC through the online input opportunity.

The 2021 spring hearing online input webpage will go live at 7 p.m. April 12 and remain open for three days (72 hours). Results will be posted as soon as they are available.

Spring turkey season opener is April 21

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is reminding Wisconsinites to get ready for the upcoming 2021 spring turkey hunt happening April 21 through June 1.

The 2021 spring turkey hunt includes six, seven-day periods running Wednesday through the following Tuesday. Each of the DNR’s seven turkey management zones will be open for hunting.

DNR seeking public input on 2021 deer season

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources announced April 7 that the public is invited to weigh in on recommendations beginning April 12 for the 2021 county-level antlerless deer harvest goals and the 2021 white-tailed deer hunting season structure.

Brewers set to start allowing tailgating again

The Milwaukee Brewers are going to start allowing tailgating again outside American Family Field before home games.

Tailgating wasn’t permitted for the team’s first home series as part of their pandemic-related protocols. The Brewers said tailgating will be permitted again starting with an April 12 game against the Chicago Cubs.

Brewers officials say the move has the support of the Milwaukee Health Department.

Menominee Indian swept Tigerton in an alternate fall season match on April 8 in Tigerton. The Eagles won by scores of 25-22, 25-23, 25-17.

Savannah Swartz recorded 14 combined kills and 13 digs for Tigerton, while Elizabeth Robbins had seven assists and 13 digs. Skyler Hauser contributed eight digs and six service points.

Menominee Indian/Gresham co-op excited to showcase new golfers

As the Menominee Indian/Gresham boys golf co-op gets ready for the spring season, it will do so needing a new group of golfers to lead the way.

Even without experienced golfers to turn to, co-coaches John Teller and Ben Dieck are eager to get the season rolling.

“Excited for some new golfers that will be coming out for the first time and some that will dual sport,” said Dieck.

Dieck added that the biggest challenge will be getting the new golfers acclimated quickly.
