LETTER: SMU came through for Florida hurricane victims

To the editor:

When disaster strikes, it’s human impulse to want to help. As Hurricane Ian took aim at Florida in late September, people far away asked what they could do. The residents of Shawano should be proud to know that your community answered the call and supplied resources to help those affected by the hurricane.

Abraham Lincoln said: “The ballot is stronger than the bullet.” Well, let’s vote and make sure our future isn’t determined by firepower. Things have gotten uglier and uglier lately, with some calling for riots and violence, and that’s not what any reasonable person wants.

“We do not have government by the majority,” Thomas Jefferson said. “We have government by the majority who participate.” Participate. Vote. Have a say in what happens in Wisconsin.

Fitting young hunters to a bow, crossbow and rifle

Not so many years ago, there was a hunting tradition to hand down Dad’s or Granddad’s rifle to the son or daughter joining the hunt. These full-size rifles, often lever-actions (which carry their own set of safety issues), would be an ill fit for a small body with shorter arms.

For as much joy I get out of preparing for the deer hunting season, I’m thrilled to say the preparation is over, and it’s time to hunt.

I’ve hunted deer since I was a little kid, tagging along with my dad and his friends before picking up a gun myself at age 12.

The extent of my deer hunting for a year — after I passed the youth hunt age restriction — was typically just the nine-day gun hunt in late November, with the occasional antlerless-only hunt sprinkled in should the first gun season have not gone as planned.

Anderson gone, but much work lies ahead

After six months of strife, replete with people wringing their hands and gnashing their teeth, the communities that make up Shawano School District finally got their wish. Blaming her for the financial woes, poor communication and a technology plan that could rival Skynet, parents and community members got the word that Randi Anderson would no longer be superintendent, effective Sept. 2.

Veterans should never become political pawns

Congress is known for its partisan bickering and its inability to get anything done. The legislative branch of our country, in the last couple of decades, is known for one side of the chamber pointing at the other side and screaming, “Demon! Demon!” Which side of the chamber does so varies, depending on the issue.
