Suring 18, Lena 6

Logan Stuart rushed for three touchdowns to help Suring overcome a penalty-filled game and move to 2-0 by taking down Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy in Lena on Thursday.

The turning point in the game was a 90-yard rushing score for Stuart on a fourth-and-1 play late in the first half.

Lena/STAA scored on the final play of the contest to avoid the shutout. The co-op dropped to 0-2.

Volleyball: Gillett secures three wins at Bonduel Invite

BONDUEL — The Gillett High School volleyball team got its season off to a fast start after earning three wins at the Bonduel Invite on Tuesday.

The Tigers, who were playing their first matches under new co-coaches Erin Buhrandt and Brooke Schaal, opened up play by dropping a match to eventual invite champion Crandon (25-21, 25-14).

Gillett responded by taking its final three matches, topping Suring (25-22, 25-19), Tigerton (25-19, 25-19) and Bonduel (26-24, 25-16).

Young Oconto Falls cross-country teams ready to run

OCONTO FALLS — Area cross-country teams opened practice on Aug. 19 in preparation for the fall season.

Oconto Falls heads into the season looking to replace several seniors, while Gillett, Suring and the Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy co-op return most of their runners from last year.

GILLETT — The Marinette & Oconto Conference will return several 2018 all-conference volleyball players to the court this fall, which in turn should lead to a fun conference race.

Gillett and Lena each return several starters from last year and hope to contend and finish well in the conference.

Gillett returns its entire 2018 starting lineup, but will under new coaches. Erin Buhrandt and Brooke Schaal will serve as co-coaches, replacing Keri Hicks.

Suring 40, Sevastopol 22

Logan Stuart carried Suring to a memorable MONLPC-8 victory over Sevastopol on Friday in Suring.

Stuart rushed for 341 yards and five touchdowns to help Suring win its 8-player debut game. The Eagles were an 11-man team last season. Sevastopol was also the reigning 8-man champions.

Girls Golf: Sadowski, Lemorande lead Oconto Falls at NEC meets

Oconto Falls competed in North Eastern Conference meets on Thursday and Friday. The Panthers took third place both days.

Oconto Falls earned a team score of 223 at Friday’s meet at River Island Golf Course in Oconto Falls. Little Chute (209) edged Luxemburg-Casco (210) for first place.

Kaylee Sadowski turned in the Panthers top score, carding a 52 in a nine-hole round. Danielle Darby fired a 54, while Kearra Champeau shot a 56.

Morgan Blazek and Grace Lemorande each shot 61s to round out Oconto Falls’ five-golfer team.

Girls Golf: Oconto Falls takes second at conference meet

Oconto Falls opened North Eastern Conference play by taking second at Twin Oaks Golf Course in Denmark on Tuesday.

The Panthers earned a team score of 223, finishing behind Denmark (210), but ahead of Luxemburg-Casco (232).

Grace Lemorande, Kaylee Sadowski and Danielle Darby all finished with rounds of 54 on the front nine. The trio earned two conference points each for their finishes.

Carli Fischer posted a 61, while Kearra Champeau shot a 62 to round out the Panthers five-golfer squad.

Oconto Falls volleyball team lacks experience heading into year

OCONTO FALLS — High school volleyball practice opened on Monday, with teams preparing for the regular season.

Oconto Falls and Lena head into the season under similar circumstances and will both play their first matches on Aug. 27, the earliest date regular season play can begin.

Coming off a season that ended in the regional finals, Oconto Falls must replace a majority of its starting lineup in order to experience that level of success again.

MONLPC-8 football conference stacked from top to bottom

GILLETT — The MONLPC-8 has all the looks of a great high school football conference race.

Gillett, Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy co-op and Suring will all be in the hunt for the eight-player conference crown.

The nine-team conference also includes Sevastopol, the reigning champion, and Gibraltar and Wausaukee, which are each coming off 7-3 seasons. Laona/Wabeno, Florence and the newly formed Green Bay N.E.W. Lutheran/Oneida Nation co-op round out the conference.

Oconto Falls girls golf team reloading as season gets underway

OCONTO FALLS — The Oconto Falls High School girls golf team is looking for several new golfers to step up as the fall season gets underway.

The Panthers will return their top two golfers, Grace Lemorande and Kaylee Sadowski, from a season ago, but also graduated three players from last year’s regional team.

Juniors Carli Fischer, Morgan Blazek and Kearra Champeau and sophomores Danielle Darby and Khloe VanDornick are golfers that coach Paul Luebke hopes are improved from last year and will help fill out the roster.
