Volleyball: Slow start, errors hurt Gillett in home loss

GILLETT — The Gillett High School volleyball team was unable to overcome a slow start in a nonconference loss to Bonduel on Monday, with final scores of 25-16, 25-17, 18-25, 25-21.

Slow starts to the first and second sets had Gillett playing catch up, and it led to some errors that helped Bonduel extend its lead. Most of the errors came on attacks, but a few came after miscommunications and lack of rotation from the lineup on the court.

GILLETT — The Gillett High School football team has endured a tough season on the field, with injuries decimating the team. Through all the adversity, several players have stepped up as leaders, including Logan Block.

Block has helped the Tigers deal with their injuries by playing several positions. The senior has helped out as a running back and often ranks among the top tacklers on the defense.

Block’s best game as a runner came in a win over Wausaukee, when he rushed for 234 yards and two touchdowns.

Gillett came up on the wrong end of a nonconference match against Bonduel on Monday in Gillett. The Bears won by scores of 25-16, 25-17, 18-25, 25-21.

Girls Golf: Sadowski cards 110 at sectional

NEENAH — Oconto Falls High School girls golfer Kaylee Sadowski posted an 18-hole round of 110 at the Division 2 Xavier Sectional at Ridgeway Country Club on Monday.

While the score was lower than several other individual qualifiers and players from sectional-qualifying teams, Sadowski's score fell short of qualifying her for state.

The junior carded a 58 on the front nine before a strong 52 on the back nine.

"What went well for me today were my iron shots. Every shot today was good made by my irons," said Sadowski.

Football: Panthers come up short in road loss

SHAWANO — The Oconto Falls High School football team fell just short of earning a nonconference road win over Shawano on Friday. The Panthers turned the ball over five times in the 21-14 loss.

“Most football games come down to just five, six plays, and when you turn the ball over, it just magnifies what happens,” said Oconto Falls coach Nick Bohl. “When we make mistakes like that, we leave 21 points off (the scoreboard). We were inside the 30 (yard line) a bunch, and we left a lot of points on the field, enough to lose the football game.”

Lena takes second at home invite

Lena turned in a strong showing at the Lena Invite on Saturday, posting a 2-1 record to take second place.

Lena topped Oneida Nation (25-22, 25-23) and Phelps (25-13, 25-10) to advance to the first-place match, which it lost to Elcho (25-23, 25-22).

Morgan Cruz and Leah Dean each made the all-tournament team for Lena.

Girls Golf: Oconto Falls' Sadowski qualifies for sectionals

DE PERE — Oconto Falls' Kaylee Sadowski shot an 18-hole round of 103 at the Division 2 Little Chute Regional at Mid Vallee Golf Course on Friday to qualify for sectionals as an individual.

Sadowski fired a 50 on the front nine and a 53 on the back nine. She will golf at the Xavier Sectional on Monday at Ridgeway Country Club in Neenah.

"It’s honestly a privilege to be going to sectionals," said Sadowski. "I couldn’t have done it without my amazing and encouraging teammates. They always kept my confidence up and were so happy for me.

Shawano 21, Oconto Falls 14

Oconto Falls could not overcome five turnovers in a nonconference road loss to Shawano on Friday. The Panthers are now 0-7 on the season.

After Shawano scored on its opening drive, Oconto Falls answered late in the first quarter when Mitchell Mann broke free for a 52-yard touchdown run.

Volleyball: Panthers fade after fast start vs. Mustangs

OCONTO FALLS — The Oconto Falls High School volleyball team had a near picture perfect start in its North Eastern Conference match against Little Chute on Thursday. But the Panthers were unable to finish off the Mustangs, dropping the last three sets of a 17-25, 25-23, 25-9, 25-20 loss.

Senior Natalie Brauer helped Oconto Falls settle into the match with several kills in the early going. Sophomore Emmie Magnin joined the party, earning three straight points to put Oconto Falls up 14-9.
