Volleyball: Gillett’s Wickman makes M&O first team

GILLETT — Every high school athlete hopes that their senior season is their best year of competition. Gillett’s Grace Wickman was able to achieve that feat while competing for the Gillett High School volleyball team this fall.

Wickman was named to the Marinette & Oconto Conference first team all-conference following a strong senior season on the court.

During conference play, Wickman accumulated 73 attack kills, 25 blocks, 24 digs and 20 aces.

Football: Five Panthers make all-conference lists

OCONTO FALLS — A quick glance at the Oconto Falls High School football team’s record doesn’t do the team justice, as the 2-7 mark doesn’t show just how competitive the Panthers were on most weeks.

Coaches around the North Eastern Conference showed their respect for Oconto Falls, with five Panthers earning all-conference honors after the regular season concluded.

While no Oconto Falls players made the first team, three landed on the second team for their play on defense.

Girls Basketball: Fast start propels Witt-Birn to win

WITTENBERG — The Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School girls basketball team built a big lead before cruising to a 71-46 nonconference victory over Gillett on Thursday.

After Gillett scored the opening basket of the game, Witt-Birn rattled off the next eight points. Juniors Emma Herb and Abi Fraaza accounted for all the points on the run.

The visiting Tigers then scored their second basket to make it an 8-4 game, but the Chargers scored the next 18 points to grab a commanding lead.

Girls Basketball: Slow start hurts Gillett in loss to Witt-Birn

WITTENBERG — The Gillett High School girls basketball team could not overcome a slow start in a season-opening 71-46 nonconference loss to Wittenberg-Birnamwood on Thursday.

It was the Tigers that grabbed the early lead after junior Karissa Schaal converted a layup, but Witt-Birn scored the next eight points. After a bucket from senior Camryn Long cut Gillett’s deficit in half, the Chargers tallied the next 18 points to go up 26-4.

Witt-Birn was able to break Gillett’s full-court pressure and forced the Tigers’ offense into a number of turnovers during the big run.

Gillett could not overcome a slow start in a season-opening nonconference loss to Wittenberg-Birnamwood on Thursday in Wittenberg.

Aubrey DeBauch finished with 19 points to pace Gillett, which trailed 30-5 late in the first half.

Tigerton 9

Suring stifled Tigerton to earn a season-opening nonconference win on Tuesday in Suring.

Kylee Stelzer hit five 3-pointers and led Suring with 21 points. Paige Krueger posted a double-double, tallying 10 points and 12 rebounds. Stephanie Huth finished with seven steals, Kelsey Smith grabbed five offensive rebounds and Jaden Bubolz had four assists.

Girls Basketball: Gillett eyeing state trip with entire team back

GILLETT — The Gillett High School girls basketball team has high aspirations heading into the 2019-20 season.

Gillett is coming off a sectional semifinal appearance and returns every player from that team. The Tigers finished 16-10 overall and 10-6 in the Marinette & Oconto Conference.

Boys Basketball: Oconto Falls has different mindset under new coach

OCONTO FALLS — The Oconto Falls High School boys basketball team enters the season under a new head coach and with a new attitude.

Gary Regal, the long-time head coach at Suring, takes over the same position for the Panthers.

“Expectations are to work hard every day and setting a new mental mindset,” said Regal. “I expect us to defend and take care of the ball from day one.”

Oconto Falls lost a couple solid seniors from last year’s team that went 5-19 overall and 2-16 in the North Eastern Conference, but also returns several talented upperclassmen.

Football: Stuart named offensive, defensive player of year in MONLPC-8

SURING — The Suring High School football team came into the season hoping to make a smooth transition to 8-man football. The Eagles did just that, tying for the MONLPC-8 title and earning a postseason berth behind a monster year from senior Logan Stuart.

Stuart was named the offensive and defensive player of the year in the conference. He won the offensive award as a running back and the defensive honor as a linebacker.

Volleyball: Oconto Falls’ Brauer earns unanimous first-team honor

OCONTO FALLS — Oconto Falls High School’s Natalie Brauer and Samantha Coron came into the fall season as the known leaders for the volleyball team. They didn’t disappoint with their play.

Both seniors were honored by the North Eastern Conference, with Brauer being a unanimous first-team selection and Coron landing on the second team.

Brauer earned the first-team selection for her all-around play on the court, but she did most of her work at the net.

She led the team with 352 attack kills on the season to go along with 45 total blocks.
