Suring wasn’t able to keep pace with Coleman in the second half of a Marinette & Oconto Conference game Tuesday in Suring.

Bryce Losurdo scored half (15) of Suring’s points on the night, while Duncan Breed chipped in seven.

Suring rallied from an early deficit and held on late for a thrilling Marinette & Oconto Conference victory over Coleman on Friday in Suring.

Kylee Stelzer led Suring, totaling 24 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and three steals. She also took a charge with nine seconds left and Coleman down just three points.

Girls Basketball: Oconto Falls stumbles in clash with Freedom

OCONTO FALLS — The Oconto Falls High School girls basketball team gave ranked Freedom all it could handle in the opening minutes, but the No. 2 ranked team in Division 3 pulled away for a 68-22 win on Thursday.

Despite knowing the tall test that awaited, Oconto Falls came into the North Eastern Conference matchup confident and playing with lots of energy.

Freedom opened the game on an 8-0 run, but Oconto Falls continued to battle.

Sophomore Alexis Euclide got the hosts on the scoreboard with a pair of free throws with 15:04 remaining in the half.

Oconto Falls was unable to keep pace with second-seeded Freedom in a North Eastern Conference matchup on Thursday in Oconto Falls.

Kari Albrecht led Oconto Falls with six points, while Hailey Peitersen had five.

St. Thomas Aquinas Academy 35

Gillett eased to a Marinette & Oconto Conference victory over St. Thomas Aquinas Academy on Tuesday in Gillett.

Karissa Schaal powered Gillett with 26 points, while Aubrey DeBauch chipped in 14 points. Camryn Long posted eight points.

Gillett outscored STAA 37-12 in the first half.

Suring cruised to a nonconference win over Goodman/Pembine on Tuesday in Suring.

Deer harvest numbers down nearly 25%

MADISON — While gun deer license sales numbers were on par with previous seasons, harvest totals took a big hit.

After 213,972 deer were registered statewide in 2018, a total of 160,769 were registered during this year’s nine-day season, according to a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources news release on Tuesday. That is a 24.9% decrease.

About the same number of licenses were purchased between the two years — 564,664 licenses this year, compared to 576,277 last year.

Suring came up short in a low-scoring nonconference game against Rosholt on Monday in Suring.

Jayden Geniesse and Ethan Hischke each scored 11 points for Suring.

GILLETT — The Gillett High School girls basketball team is loaded with talent and primed for another deep postseason run. Senior Sydney Young hopes to play a big part in the team’s success.

Young serves as the team’s point guard, often setting up her teammates for easy buckets. She’s also is a consistent outside shooter and can rack up the points in a hurry.

Despite battling foul trouble in the team’s season-opening loss to Wittenberg-Birnamwood, Young tallied eight points, including two 3-pointers.

Oconto Falls stifled Clintonville in the first half and went on for a convincing North Eastern Conference win in Oconto Falls on Tuesday.

Kari Albrecht knocked down five 3-pointers and led Oconto Falls with 19 points. Natalie Brauer added 10 points, while McKayla Goebel chipped in seven.

Oconto Falls led 26-13 at halftime.

Deer harvest numbers from opening weekend down

MADISON — More than half a million hunters purchased licenses to enjoy opening weekend of Wisconsin’s 168th gun deer season.

As of midnight Nov. 24, preliminary figures indicate that the number of deer hunters in Wisconsin is near par with last year.

Sales for gun, bow, crossbow, sports and patron licenses reached 782,815 as of midnight Sunday. Of that total, 555,227 were for gun privileges only. This number includes gun, patron and sports licenses.
