Athlete Profile: Dequez Sepulveda

SURING — The Suring High School boys basketball team is under the direction of new head coach Chris Geniesse this season, and seniors like Dequez Sepulveda are trying to help the team make a smooth transition.

Sepulveda makes an impact on both sides of the court for the Eagles, serving as a reliable scorer on offense as well as a strong defender.

The senior already has experienced some memorable moments on the court during his high school career. Sepulveda averaged over eight points during the 2018-19 season when Suring made it to a regional title game.

Oconto Falls led from start to finish, pulling away late to secure a North Eastern Conference win over Marinette on Monday in Oconto Falls.

UW-Stout

Oconto Falls graduates Mike Friedman and Michael Fifield ended their cross-country seasons at UW-Stout competing in the NCAA Division III Championship in Louisville, Kentucky.

Friedman was the team’s top finisher, placing 53rd as an individual with a time of 25 minutes, 8.9 seconds. Fifield came in 187th with a time of 25:59.9. Stout took 21st as a team.

Girls Basketball: Suring scratches out win over Lena

SURING — Kylee Stelzer spent much of the second half on the bench in foul trouble, but when she got back on the court, she played a clutch role in helping the Suring girls claim a 45-41 Marinette and Oconto Conference victory over Lena on Friday.

Stelzer, a junior, picked up her fourth foul at the 11:47 mark of the second half and the hosts up 25-22. When she checked back in at the 4:51 mark, the Eagles were on the wrong side of a 33-32 score.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Suring 45

Lena 41

Kylee Stelzer came up clutch down the stretch to help Suring take down Lena in a Marinette & Oconto Conference battle on Friday in Suring.

Stelzer, who missed a good chunk of the second half due to foul trouble, hit two 3-pointers in the final three-and-a-half minutes of the contest. The first triple helped Suring regain the lead, and the second gave the hosts a four-point lead with a little over a minute remaining.

GILLETT — The Gillett High School boys basketball team believes it has the players and skills to turn in a strong season on the court. Wyatt Herzog is part of the team’s core and hopes to end his senior season on a strong note.

Herzog does a little bit of everything for the Tigers. He is a capable scorer and can rebound well for a point guard. Herzog is also a strong passer, helping set up some of his teammates for shots.

Oconto Falls’ Clayton Whiting had high expectations for himself in his first high school wrestling season. The then-freshman lived up to the hype, taking first at regionals and sectionals before capping the season with a 2019 state title in the Division 2 152-pound weight class.

Menominee (Mich.) 56

Gillett 46

Gillett came up short in a tournament clash with Menominee (Mich.) on Saturday in Gillett.

Karissa Schaal scored 15 points to lead Gillett on the court. Aubrey DeBauch added 11 points, while Camryn Long had nine.

Menominee outscored Gillett 33-22 in the first half. The Tigers struggled at the free throw line for a second straight night, making just nine of their 20 attempts.

Gillett cruised to a lopsided win over Oconto in a tournament matchup on Friday in Gillett.

Aubrey DeBauch led Gillett with 26 points, while Karissa Schaal had 20 and Sydney Young 10.

Gillett overcame a 12-of-34 night at the free throw line.

Lena dropped a Lena Holiday Tournament clash with Valley Christian on Friday in Lena.

Gillett’s Young signs letter of intent

GILLETT — Sydney Young took the next step in her athletic career by signing a letter of intent to play women’s basketball at Ripon College.

Young signed her letter of intent in front of family, coaches and her current teammates at Gillett Secondary School on Friday.

It was a rather quick recruitment process for the Gillett guard, who said it wasn’t until this past summer that Ripon started taking a look at her.

Ripon approached Young during summer league play and invited the senior to visit.
