Gillett cross-country teams place first at invitational

The Gillett boys and girls teams each placed first at the Goodman-Pembine Invitational on Thursday in Pembine.

The girls posted a score of 19, while the boys tallied a 51 to edge Oconto (54).

Sylvia Hansen, Ryann Wagner and Carleigh Kaczmarek placed second through fourth in the girls race. Hansen had a time of 21 minutes, 46.5 seconds, while Wagner finished in 22:20.2 and Kaczmarek in 22:29.8.

Angela Mosconi (23:40.1) and Kasey Hansen (23:55.3) rounded out the team score by taking seventh and 10th, respectively.

The Milwaukee Brewers rallied from a four-run deficit on Wednesday in Milwaukee to split their series with the Detroit Tigers.

Keston Hiura belted a three-run home run in the third inning to put Milwaukee on the scoreboard. After Detroit tacked on another run, Omar Narvaez came through with a two-run single in the fifth to tie it.

Heat top Bucks at buzzer to go up 2-0

Jimmy Butler made two free throws with no time remaining to lift the Miami Heat over the Milwaukee Bucks 116-114 on Wednesday night in Lake Buena Vista, Florida for a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinal series.

Butler rattled in the first, which was the only one that mattered, then made the second for the final margin. He got fouled by Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo with about a tenth of a second left on a jump shot from the left corner.

Referees sent Butler to the line, with no one else on the lane, as some Heat teammates knelt at midcourt.

Packers Television Network to air exclusive season preview and kickoff weekend shows

As the unique start to the football season continues, the Green Bay Packers are preparing to air a Season Preview Show and a special Kickoff Weekend Show over the next several weeks on the Packers TV Network affiliate stations.

With the cancellation of the preseason this year, the subsequent changes to the team’s training camp routines and the circumstances surrounding the pandemic, the team determined that Packers Family Night would not take place this year in order to allow the team to continue preparing for the start of the regular season.

Brewers trade away David Phelps

The Philadelphia Phillies acquired right-hander David Phelps from the Milwaukee Brewers before Monday's trade deadline for three players to be named.

The 33-year-old Phelps is 2-3 with a 2.77 ERA in 12 games this season. He has struck out 20 and allowed only seven hits, four earned runs and two walks in 13 innings.

Phelps sensed there was a chance he could get traded. He's been moved near the trade deadline twice before, going from Miami to Seattle in 2017 and from Toronto to the Chicago Cubs in 2019.

Bucks topped by Heat in series opener

Jimmy Butler scored a playoff career-high 40 points, Goran Dragic added 27 and the Miami Heat clamped down defensively in the final three quarters to beat the Milwaukee Bucks 115-104 in game one of their Eastern Conference semifinal series on Monday night in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.

Bam Adebayo had 12 points, 17 rebounds and six assists for the fifth-seeded Heat, who are 3-1 overall against the top-seeded Bucks this season. Tyler Herro added 11 points for Miami, which improved to 5-0 in the postseason.

Athlete Profile: Kaylee Sadowski

After a strong finish to the 2019 season, Oconto Falls High School’s Kaylee Sadowski is hoping for a memorable ending to her golf career.

Sadowski capped her junior season by advancing to sectionals, and is hoping to get the chance to accomplish the same feat this fall in her senior season.

The senior has gotten her final season off to a strong start, leading the Panthers in their first two matches.

Suring volleyball team keying in on teamwork, defense

The Suring High School volleyball team is prioritizing teamwork as it prepares for the fall season.

Suring finished near the bottom of the Marinette & Oconto Conference standings last fall and graduated several seniors from that team. But by working together, the Eagles are hoping to overcome some of the team’s inexperience and put together a solid season.

Leading the charge for coach Tonia Kruschke is senior hitter Kelsey Smith, who is the only all-conference player returning for the Eagles. She made the honorable mention team.

Gillett volleyball team hoping for strong season under new coach

The Gillett Secondary School volleyball team is down a few impact players from last year and under the direction of a new coach, but the team is still expecting big things on the court this fall.

Jill Halla is the team’s new coach, and she’s excited to get the season underway. “I expect our team to be one of the top in our conference,” said Halla. “We have some talented players, and am I excited to see what we can do.”

Oconto Falls cross-country teams hoping to build off returning runners

The Oconto Falls High School cross-country team will try and blend returning talent with some new runners to turn in a successful fall season.

Each team, which are coached by Lon Ludemann, returns three starters from a season ago.

Back from the boys team is senior Braden Uelmen, junior Joe Adams and sophomore Landon Budz.
