Archery events sharpen bowhunting skills

Bowhunting season has a way of sneaking up on me and probably most other archery deer hunters, too. The Sept. 16 opener is now just a month and a half away. It’s hard to dream about cool fall mornings in the woods, waiting for that buck to walk by during summer’s warm, sticky weather, but this is when the work begins.

If you want to make that shot count when everything aligns to bring that deer within bow range, you need to make sure your archery gear is working properly and you can hit what you’re shooting at.

Historical society to serve up brats, burgers

The Suring Area Historical Society will host a brat and burger fry Aug. 4 in the parking lot of the Suring Area Library, 604 E. Main St., Suring.

Serving will be from 9:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. Sandwiches and cookies will be served, and proceeds will support the Suring Museum.

Restoration depicted in Menominee pageant

The latest presentation by the Menominee Pageant Players will feature segments from older Menominee pageant scripts combined with a new scene that pays tribute to the Menominee Restoration Act, which celebrates its 50th anniversary later this year.

Titled “Onakow,” the Menominee word for “yesterday,” the pageant will be performed at sunset on Aug. 2 at the Woodland Bowl on Fairgrounds Road in Keshena. “Onakow” is adapted from previous work done by Menominee writers Joe Keshena, James G. Frechette and Mani Boyd.

Teleservice entities hand out scholarships

Nsight Telservices and Cellcom have announced that almost two dozen teens will be receiving scholarships for higher education this fall.

Nsight has selected seven graduating high school seniors from across its service area to receive $1,200 scholarships, including Carter Hill and Molly Haines of Oconto Falls High School and Braeden Hensel of Pulaski High School.

Parallel parking and other driving horrors

When I went to Antigo last week, I had to parallel park. Thanks to side-by-side and angle parking, I don’t need to parallel park that often. That’s good, because I can’t do it in what might be called textbook fashion, so I avoid it whenever possible. I surprised myself that day by squeezing into a space just a few feet longer than my 2021 Ford Escape Hybrid.

Yellow-headed blackbirds special visitors

It is a special delight this spring and summer to be seeing yellow-headed blackbirds in our area. We see lots of red-winged blackbirds and look forward to their early insistent “conk-la-ree” calls heralding in spring. Seeing yellow-headed blackbirds has the feel of a “guest” in the neighborhood or a special traveler stopping our way.

Upper Iowa University has announced Isabelle Bergsbaken, of Oconto, graduated magna cum laude in May with a Bachelor of Arts in history.

Drake University

Drake University is Des Moines, Iowa, has announced that Charles Kuhn, of Shawano, graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in history.

University of Wisconsin-Platteville

The University of Wisconsin-Platteville announced its chancellor’s list, honoring those with perfect 4.0 grade-point averages for the spring 2023 semester.

Old Glory Candy moves to new location

Visitors to downtown Shawano may have noticed a familiar retail favorite in a new spot.

On June 23, Old Glory Candy officially opened the doors to their larger location in the heart of downtown. This move expands their retail space from 400 square feet to almost 3,000 square feet.

In addition to remodeling and relocating their store, Old Glory Candy is celebrating the milestone of its 10th anniversary. Owners Curt and Karen Preston and James and Jenny Maltbey had previously discussed finding a larger retail location when the right opportunity appeared.

Bonduel’s Rouse receives 40 Under 40 Award

A Fox Cities-based business magazine has singled out a Bonduel resident as a 40 Under 40 Award recipient.

Nina Nolan Rouse, director of communications and marketing at St. Norbert College in De Pere, is one of 40 people from throughout northeastern Wisconsin to receive the award from Insight Publications. The award recognizes and celebrates the accomplishments of young professionals who have made significant civic and professional contributions to their communities.

Barn quilt commemorates bicycling event

From 2012 to 2022, Matty Mathison engaged over 80 volunteers annually to help host the Bike the Barn Quilts event on the last Saturday in September.

The ride was a fundraising event for the nonprofit organization, Shawano Pathways, which was started in Shawano in 2011. After 10 years, Shawano Pathways volunteers decided Bike the Barn Quilts would no longer be part of the organization’s annual list of activities.
