Verkuilens looking forward to big summer

One ice cream shop in Wittenberg is expecting a business boom this summer.

Rick and Karla Verkuilen own and operate Britt’s Ice Cream and Candy Shop in the heart of Wittenberg, at 502 S. Webb St. Britt’s has served as a spot for people in the community to sit and talk with each other.

“You have some locals who come in, grab some food and just sit and talk,” said Rick Verkuilen.

“I love that,” added Karla Verkuilen.

Mondus plans to sell Anello’s Torch Lite

An iconic Shawano restaurant is up for sale.

Rita Mondus, the owner of Anello’s Torch Lite, made the decision to sell on the heels of her pending retirement.

“I think it is about time for me to retire,” said Mondus.

Pineapple Port is a killer of a town

Since we would be on the road for a family wedding, I selected Amy Vansant’s “Pineapple Lies” as a travel companion.

Pineapple Port is a Florida retirement community. Residents are at least 55 with one exception – thirty-something Charlotte Morton.

The orphaned Charlotte was raised there by her grandmother. By the time her grandmother died, Charlotte was in her late teens and a part of the community, so rules were bent allowing her to stay.

Delta Kappa Gamma

Brenda Heller talked about Days for Girls, during Delta Kappa Gamma Nu Chapter’s April 10 in-person and Zoom meeting held in Shawano. She is the chairperson for the TitleTown Days for Girls in Green Bay. Days for Girls is a nonprofit international organization founded in 2008 that provides handmade feminine products and hygiene education. Forty percent of menstruating girls and women throughout the world do not have access to hygiene products. Girls miss school one week per month and many times fall behind in their education.

Shawano plans Arbor Day event

The city of Shawano will honor award recipients who are making the community a little greener for Arbor Day at 10 a.m. April 28 at Smalley Park.

Members of the Shawano Tree Advisory Committee and city officials will recognize Friend of Nature Award winners Don and Jackie Fairbairn and River Ridge Condominium Group as this year’s award recipients.

KPS uses $15,000 grant to create educational games

With assistance from the College of Menominee Nation, students and staff at Keshena Primary School have aided in developing a new way to teach material in the classroom.

The school received a $15,000 grant from CMN to help develop nine games for Breakout EDU.

Breakout EDU is an educational website that provides 700 digital games and 600 games to be played in person with a Breakout EDU kit. The games consist of a scenario, where a group of people are given clues and that group must work together to solve the problem or the puzzle.

Bridge the Gap fundraiser goes online

Bridge the Gap for Autism runs almost entirely on donations and sponsorships, and one of its big fundraisers every year has typically been a dinner and silent auction at Romy’s Holiday Inn.

This year, the event has been moved entirely online to WiscoBid.com due to the coronavirus.

Among the more than 100 lots for sale are sports memorabilia, Ducks Unlimited prints, special themed baskets, household items, fun items and much more. Bidding on the silent auction goes through April 27. All proceeds will go directly to Bridge the Gap for Autism.

Lions Club holding carnival, bike rodeo

The Clintonville Lions Club will once again host its spring carnival from May 20-22.

It will also host a separate a bike rodeo event on May 22.

Carnival rides will open at 5 p.m. May 20 and run until 10 p.m. Hours on May 21 will be 5-11 p.m. and hours May 22 will be noon to 11 p.m.

Ticket prices for the carnival are $3, with one ticket required per ride on May 21-22. The special on May 20 will have tickets for $2. A bracelet for unlimited rides can be purchased in advance for $25 from May 1-19 at Tadych’s EconoFoods, or at the carnival for $30.
