The Quilting Friends of Hatley was formed in 2008 by a few ladies in the Hatley area. Members of this group come from Hatley, Bevent, Elderon, Wittenberg, Birnamwood and Antigo areas. When the Hatley American Legion Auxiliary disbanded a couple of years ago, they found a few worthy causes that would benefit from a donation from their treasury and we were one of them.
Terry Lorge, FWD Museum director, talked about the fascinating history of the Four Wheel Drive Seagrave Company during a tour of the museum in Clintonville during Nu Chapter’s October meeting.
Brothers-in-law William Besserdich and Otto Zachow, along with Walter Olen, established the Badger Four Wheel Drive Auto Company in 1909. They patented the first successful four-wheel drive automobile in the world that year.
Olen was the first president of the company. Besserdich and Zachow separated in 1913 when Besserdich moved to Oshkosh to form the Oshkosh Truck Company.
Abrams Spotlight Productions Inc. invites the community to its performance of Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas.”
The musical, directed by Debra Jolly, will be presented Dec. 1-4 and Dec. 8-11 at the Nancy Byng Community Theater, 5852 Maple St., Abrams. Shows are at 7 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and 1 p.m. Sundays.
Rebecca Charles, from Shawano, was named to Western Technical College’s president’s list of high distinction for the summer 2022 term.
To be included on the president’s list, students must achieve a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher and carry six or more credits in an associate’s degree or technical diploma program.

Edi Cornelius-Grosskopf showcased the dark side of the United States’ relations with Native American tribes while speaking at the Shawano County Historical Society annual membership meeting Oct. 17 at the Shawano Civic Center.
Cornelius-Grosskopf’s sad, yet inspirational, presentation focused on her mother’s experience of being forcibly taken from her family to live in an Indian Boarding School in Tomah. Her mother’s experiences prompted Cornelius-Grosskopf to write a book, “Traveling Home Blessed by Spirit-filled Songs: A Journey to Indian Boarding School and Home.”
Parents not wanting to read that bedtime story for the 100th time and those who prefer audiobooks to turning the pages of actual books are getting some good news.
The Shawano County Library has started a new program called Stories on the Cloud, which features library staff reading from a variety of books as yet another way to connect with patrons.
