County celebrating Library Card Signup Month

September is Library Card Signup Month, and Shawano County Library will join the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries nationwide to remind parents, caregivers and students that signing up for a library card is the first step on the path to academic achievement and lifelong learning.

USDA aid available for timber harvesters, haulers

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is providing up to $200 million to provide relief to timber harvesting and timber hauling businesses that have experienced losses due to COVID-19 as part of USDA’s Pandemic Assistance for Producers initiative.

Loggers and truckers can apply for assistance through USDA’s Farm Service Agency through Oct. 15. The Pandemic Assistance for Timber Harvesters and Haulers program (PATHH) is administered by FSA in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service.

Play shows ‘You Can’t Take it With You’

The old saying goes that you can’t take it with you when you die.

Theater lovers will be able to find out if that’s true when the Box in the Wood Theatre Guild debuts “You Can’t Take it With You” next week, the guild’s first show at the Mielke Arts Center in nearly two years after the coronavirus pandemic forced the theater group to go dark.

Sue Kluge, the show’s director, is glad that Box in the Wood will be able to host live plays again.

‘Squeeze Me’ puts Hiaasen’s views into focus

When I saw that Carl Hiaasen’s “Squeeze Me” was available, I just had to download it. Hiaasen is known for his dislike for over-development, pollution and corruption, but I wasn’t prepared for how strongly he’d make his feelings known.

The very wealthy, very tiny Kiki Pew Fitzsimmons disappears from Lipid House, where one of the many irrelevant charity balls held in Palm Beach, Florida, was in full swing. Authorities assume she’d been abducted.

Barn at Sunset Acres breaks ground

Remnants of corn stalks lay near where an interesting new wedding venue broke ground Aug. 23 in the village of Pulaski.

The Barn at Sunset Acres is being touted as a state-of-the art facility that will combine the rustic feel of a barn wedding with modern equipment that will make a couple’s special day seem like the best of their lives. Completion is expected in summer 2022.

Small town turns out to be full of ‘Chaos’

“Chaos In Little Leaf Creek” by Cindy Bell was a nice break from the gritty mystery I had just finished. It was listed as the first in Bell’s Little Leaf Creek cozy mysteries. I would have liked to have a little more character background, but I guess it might be in the second book.

Children’s sleep routines should adjust for school

Summer vacation means more relaxed schedules for most families, where bedtimes and wake-up times may wander a bit as they enjoy camping, traveling, and all the fun activities. That relaxed schedule comes to an end, though, when school begins again.

“As August rolls around and the first days of school draw closer, it’s a great time to get our kids back into healthy sleep patterns,” said Dr. Sneha Gurunath Subbarayan, a pediatrician at ThedaCare Physicians Pediatrics-Neenah. “We cannot overstress the importance of children getting sufficient sleep to be successful in school.”

Historical society telling World War I stories

The Shawano County Historical Society, with help from the Shawano Parks and Recreation Department, will present “Headstones: World War I Stories,” at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 11 at Woodlawn Cemetery, 1115 E. Green Bay St., Shawano. This event will be free to the public.

The second in a series of walking cemetery tours over the coming years focusing on veterans, “Headstones” will examine the lives of four of Shawano’s own World War I veterans buried in the cemetery — Arthur Cantwell, Oscar Druckrey, William McKinley Wallrich and Edwin Elefson.
