Corridors bustle with energy as school year begins

With the start of the new school year upon us, it has been exciting to be a part of the energy and activities that come with the return of our students!

As I write this newsletter, it is currently the first day of school and it won’t be long before the halls will be lined with examples of student work and bulletin board celebrations. Our staff has worked very hard to prepare for 2021-22 and look forward to challenging our students to another level of personal and academic success.

Menominee program harvests healthy knowledge

Jennifer Gauthier is inspired by indigenous food stories. The Menominee tribal member recognizes that the important work tribal nations throughout the world were doing to practice food sovereignty was inherent in the knowledge of her people.

Preventative care needed for children

A new report recently published by the American Academy of Pediatrics and Georgetown University Center for Children and Families highlights the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on preventative pediatric care.

According to the report, pediatric office visits fell 27% during the pandemic, for various reasons, including economic hardship and safety measures put in place to limit exposure to COVID-19.

Club Notes: Shawano Area Writers

Shawano Area Writers met Aug. 19 in the Veslak Room at the Shawano County Library. There were 12 members present.

Dennis Vickers, president, started the July 19 meeting with the reading of the minutes by Barb King. The minutes were approved.

Next was the treasurer’s report by John Mutter. The report was approved.

There were no reports about writing classes yet. This will be revisited next month.

In new business, Fiona Hoffman sent a thank you card for the $2,000 scholarship she will be using at Eastern Arizona College.

Ambulance service hosting open house

Shawano Ambulance Service will be hosting an open house to showcase its new facility located at 220 N. Main St. in Shawano on Saturday, Sept. 18 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. A short presentation will take place at 10:30 a.m.

Unique pattern highlights 371st barn quilt

Shawano County’s latest barn quilt, No. 371, is now on display at W1042 Main Laney Drive, Pulaski.

It is adjacent to Laney Cheese and is easily visible from state Highway 29. Sponsored by Phil Przybylinski and Alexi Charneski, the name of the quilt pattern is Eminent Discovery.

The design of the quilt pattern includes pine trees which can be seen emerging along and throughout the property among surrounding farm fields. In the center of the quilt is the legend that goes by many names — Sasquatch, Big Foot, Great Tracker, Secluded Tribe and others.

Northcentral Technical College

Northcentral Technical College has announced the president’s list for outstanding academic achievement for the spring 2021 term. The following students enrolled in a post-secondary program, earned a 3.75 grade-point average or above and successfully completed a minimum of six credits during the spring term.

Bowman, Fernandez named to state council

The Wisconsin Women’s Council has announced that Dr. Jolene Bowman and Rachel Fernandez have been appointed by Gov. Tony Evers to the Wisconsin Women’s Council Board.

Homecoming parade coming later this month

The 31st annual Shawano Country Chamber of Commerce Fall Homecoming Parade will be held at 6 p.m. Sept. 24 with lineup on Elizabeth Street beginning at 5 p.m.

Parade participants will need to enter the staging area off of Lincoln Street. The parade route starts at the corner of Elizabeth and Main Street, proceeds north on Main Street turning left at Green Bay Street with another left on Washington Street and ending at Franklin Park.
